Jack's run for city council may be hurt by Meg's arrest. Beth debates joining a group of soldier's wives. JJ wakes up to find himself in a military hospital.
The Pryors are stunned by the career and family life of their single mother new neighbor. A nun tries to curve Meg's antiwar protests in a more creative direction. Jack finds that he may have to decide between his political campaign and the rest of his life.
Chris agrees to help Meg get a cast for her play if she'll help him with a break and enter. Jack looks to a new group as potential voters in his city council campaign. Roxann moves in with the Pryors.
JJ's relationship with a Vietnamese girl causes him to see a different side of the war. Jack's opponents try to undermine his campaign through dirty politics. Meg continues to work on the play but the bad influence of Chris starts to rear its head.
Meg finds herself in trouble with the anti-war message of her play. Finding herself at odds with the administration brings her closer to Chris. Roxanne is thrown for a loop when Luke comes back to Philadelphia. Jack is taxed by his new position as councilman.
Meg receives a suspension because of her anti-war antics. The Pryor's get word that JJ has been declared MIA.
Helen finds that everything reminds her of her MIA son. Meg accompanies her father to Washington, D.C.
JJ is discovered alive but fears the motives of his potential savior. Meg is asked to speak to a school assembly. Helen seeks help in the form of a psychiatrist.
JJ finds encouragement and help in the form of another soldier. Helen helps Beth adjust to being a mother. Chris takes on the recruiting center.
Even after his return home, JJ continues to be plagued by thoughts of Vietnam. Beth acts as his lifeline and they decide on a wedding date. Pete suspects Chris's involvement in the Army center fire. JJ is put off by Helen's involvement in anti-war activity.
Meg feels differently about Chris after they escalate their relations and then he confesses lying to her. Helen expresses her desire for JJ and Beth to have a proper Catholic wedding. Henry takes on a new task which also leads to a new person in his life.
JJ gets a letter from Vietnam and then uses his down payment for a house to help the family of the girl he'd been with there. JJ and Beth wed. Chris seeks Meg's forgiveness.
JJ agrees to take Meg to her prom after Chris takes off. Upset by an argument with her brother, Meg finds comfort with Sam. Jack takes a firm stance with the council and his family feels the pinch.
Meg prepares her graduation speech. Helen gets Shelly a "real job" at the travel agency. The winner of the Campbell's Soup essay contest is announced.
Meg and Roxanne travel to Hollywood when they're picked to appear on a special American Bandstand. They meet up with Barbara Eden on the I Dream of Jeannie set. Jack is troubled by an investigative journalist looking into city council corruption.
Jack is confronted by the aftereffects of his older brother's serious car accident. Beth wants to reconcile with her father. Meg and Roxanne decide to make up Patty. JJ starts off on the right foot at his new aeronautics job.
Chris informs Meg that he's been drafted and she faces the choice of whether or not to join him on his dodge and leave Philadelphia. Helen supports a friend who is waiting for her son's coffin after he was killed in combat.
