The seemingly perfect town of Trinity, South Carolina, is ruled by Sheriff Lucas Buck who runs his force without regard to law, order or conscience. Ben Healy, his deputy, is concerned about his boss's amorality, but is helpless to stop him. Dr. Matt Crower is a more worthy opponent, but he does not realize the power of his adversary. Gail Emory, a former Trinity resident who is a newspaper reporter, returned to the scene of her haunted past when she heard that Sheriff Buck is threatening her young cousin Caleb Temple, whose sister Merlyn, has died mysteriously. Gail's return to Trinity sets into motion a series of confrontations that have terrible consequences.
