Stop Making Fun of the Developmentally Disabled

    January 18, 2007
It has been heartbreaking to see developmentally disabled adults in both segments of the show aired thus far being made fun of on national TV. The idea is for these adults to assimilate into society and not to be ridiculed by those who should know better. American Idol should also improve its ratio of good singers to awful singers. It is my understanding that staff screen singers four or five times before they ever get to the judges. To subject the judges to the worst of the worst is almost as bad as subjecting us to it. At least we can turn the TV off. For the judges, there is no escape, and you can see when their patience begins to wear thin. To see two hours of people selected just so Simon and Randy can make fun of them is ridiculous. Instead, the bulk of the great singers are never seen by viewers. I like the idea of seeing the good singers before they hit Hollywood so we can root for our favorites. Improve the ratio and be respectful of the developmentally disabled. That could be YOUR kid someone is humiliating on TV. All of the staff on American Idol should repeat as a mantra "There by the grace of God go I."

    just a suggestion:

    January 6, 2007
I love the show, but agree with an earlier comment: less of the "horrible" singers, please! A few are entertaining, to a point, but eventually you just feel badly for them and want to 'get on with the show!' I also wonder why they don't go back and see where the former contestants are now, that would be much more entertaining. They have a number of seasons to work with now, it would be nice to see what they are up to; whether they have continued to sing, or if life has returned to the 'pre idol' state for them. Just a suggestion :)

    Give me a BREAK!

    January 18, 2007
Oh you people crack me UP.. do you HONESTLY think for one second that the majority of those people were serious about their singing? They go to the auditions because THEY WANT TO BE ON TV... plain and simple. Anyone who watches the show knows that the three judges do NOT judge all those people shown in the stadiums. Those thousands are broken down, do a quick 2 minute audtion for production crews and only a few hundred actually make it to the judges. Do those producers put through people they KNOW will get stomped? ABSOLUTELY they do--like it or not, people LIKE to make fun of other people--espcially when those people ASK for it! You can't tell me that those people have never seen the show before--they had to have known what to expect from Simon. That kid that was the juggler was so fake it wasn't even funny! He just wanted to be on TV and guess what? He was. Big whoop (as Simon would say). I think Simon gets so annoyed because he KNOWS that most of these people are NOT serious about singing. Granted, there are the few that are serious that really just have no talent. Simon tells them the truth and they fall apart. Who's to blame there? Simon for telling the truth? Or the so-called friends of the wanna-be singer that have been wrongly stroking their ego all this time--lying, telling them they CAN sing rather than telling them the truth! The truth hurts at times yes, but at least it's the truth.
I love Simon--he doesn't play around. This is serious for him.

    Please No More

    January 17, 2007
Fox, I have been watch AI since season one. Please start showing more of the people who make it, This first show was by far the worst ever. Some of my friends who are also AI fans refuse to watch it until the final 24 are picked. Im begining to feel the same. If anyone thinks this is entertaining think again.

    Puuleeesee!

    January 17, 2007
I love the show once the auditions are over and usually like some of the auditions however...last night was ridiculous. Is this entertainment at the "singers?" expense? Do they really need to let them keep going as they embarrass themselves in front of millions of viewers. I even felt bad for guest judge Jewel. She was obviously appalled at the laughing and giggling from the other judges as the person auditioning went on and on. I got the feeling that she wanted to just slide under the table and wished she had never agreed to be a part of what Simon now seems to think is "entertainment." Simon's comment was "I don't even know why I am a part of this show anymore." Does he want us to believe that he has no say in who they parade in front of him? Is this show promoting the idea that it is okay to degrade people who think they may actually have talent even when it is obvious that they don't?
