Angel, Cordelia, and Wesley decide to add savvy vampire hunter Charles Gunn into their ranks. Angel ponders his own immortality and finds himself in a crisis when he mistakenly slays a demon who was protecting a young girl. Meanwhile, Darla tries to get back to normal after her resurrection.
Angel has Cordelia and Wesley look into an abandoned Hollywood hotel in which unbeknownst to the pair, almost fifty years ago, Angel himself was a tortured, reclusive resident.
Cordelia decides to become Gunn's protector when a vision tells her he may be in danger, but she soon learns firsthand that watching over the headstrong Gunn may be a full-on job which requires additional assistance.
Angel meets a woman whose unwieldy powers of telekinesis mirror his own in years past. He also realizes that Darla has been visiting him at night, causing his ongoing restlessness.
Angel ends up back in 1860 during one of the continued restless nights brought on by Darla, a time when he first met Drusilla. Darla's ongoing presence in Angel's awakened state and her dark sway over him, however, begins to concern the rest of the gang.
Angel tries to figure out the meaning of his dark dreams by traveling to a very mystical guru, which leaves Wesley to be the conscience-ridden savior in his absence.
Angel attempts to extricate Darla out of the tight grasp of Wolfram & Hart, and the extent of her vampire beginnings as well as Angel's murky and dangerous history with her, a time when the two were close with Spike and Drusilla, is revealed.
Angel gets assistance from Gunn when he masquerades as an prominent vampire thug in an attempt to protect a shroud which has strange effects on the mind.
Angel uses Gunn's help to find Darla, whose shared century-plus love has continued to haunt his head, but when he learns she has a terminal disease, he must decide whether to let her die slowly or return her to a state of vampire immortality.
After Drusilla turns Darla back into a vampire, Angel must track Darla down, fearing she and Drusilla will unleash themselves upon the city's potential prey, an old practice from their past. Wesley, Cordelia, and Gunn, meanwhile, are concerned that they are Angel's last line of defense between sanity and the influence of evil.
After Angel decides he no longer requires the assistance of Wesley, Cordelia, and Gunn, leaving them to handle the business on their own, he isolates himself and trains to take on Darla and Drusilla before the two are able to destroy all of Los Angeles.
Angel discovers that Wolfram & Hart has been pilfering contributions to a shelter for teens, but as he threatens to expose their shady doings, a former enemy comes forward to cause trouble for him.

Angel has an epiphany following an unfulfilling passionate exchange with Darla, which helps him return to the world of the living, but he encounters resistance when he wants to apologize and come back with Cordelia, Gunn, and Wesley.
Angel plans a suicide mission in order to stop a demon, the senior partner form Wolfram & Hart, who hails from hell and is coming for a visit.
As the Angel Investigations team reunites and tries to track down a vampire cult and its charamastic leader, Cordelia finds that her old high school friend, Harmony, wants to join the unit. Even though she soon realizes that Harmony's odd behavior is due to the fact that Harmony's a vampire, she decides to bring her into the fold anyway.
Angel runs into Lindsey while tracking a mysterious man from Cordelia's visions. Lindsey gets involved with the case when he learns that his new transplanted hand is possessed and that the hand belonged to the figure in Cordelia's vision. The duo are soon led to combine forces in order to take down a lab where half-living bodies are being stored by Wolfram & Hart.
When a brutal demon comes through a portal in the bar owned by the Host, who the group finds out is actually named Lorne, Angel learns that it is from Lorne's home world, which he escaped, and it is up to Angel to destroy it and send its master, Landok, back to its own dimension. The only problem is that in doing so, Cordelia gets dragged down into the dimension as well.
Cordelia inadvertently gets stuck in the world of the Host when she goes through a portal, a place where humans receive less-than-stellar treatment. Angel, Wesley, and Gunn, along with the Host, try to bring her back, which means going in themselves through another portal.
While Angel and the gang work to stay alive in the other dimension after receiving a death sentence. Cordelia's fate is not much better, as she learns that as Princess, she is expected to mate with the Groosalugg, and that she is under heavy surveillance.
