'Mad Men': The Most Outrageous Moments So Far

Roger Sterling has dinner with the Drapers.

To all the critics who say nothing ever happens on "Mad Men," we say you must have had too many martinis at lunch today. When you think about it, just as much (if not more) insanity occurs on this show as on any other on television. From severed feet to incestuous grabbing to secret identities revealed, here are the show's most jaw-dropping moments to date:
This is Why They Don't Allow Lawnmowers in Ad Offices
Because when you take a lawnmower on a joyride in an enclosed space with no lawn and the new British guy's ankle, sometimes the two collide. Nobody saw dismemberment coming on such a classy show, which is why it was one of the most genius moments.
Gene Confuses Betty with her Deceased Mother
It had been clear all episode that Gene wasn't quite right in the head after suffering a stroke, but it wasn't until he grabbed his daughter Betty's breast and asked her to "go upstairs" that we knew Grandpa Gene was officially not long for this world.
Roger Pukes Oysters on the Carpet at Work
After catching Roger making a pass at Betty, Don sought out his revenge by bribing the Sterling Cooper elevator operator to pretend the lifts were out of order, then proceeded to get his boss good and liquored up at a midday oyster lunch. After climbing over 20 flights of stairs to meet with some important clients, Roger's stomach had enough of its contents and expelled them at their feet, while Don stood by, smirking.
Sal Finally (Almost) Gets Some
One night on a business trip, an eager young bellboy aggressively convinced closeted Sal to finally give in to his urges. Unfortunately, a fire alarm went off and their tryst had to come to an abrupt end. Sal just can't catch a break.
Betty Is Not Familiar with Waste Receptacles
In the '60s, apparently, when you were finished enjoying a family picnic with your precocious children and philandering husband, it was acceptable to just shake out the blanket with all of the leftovers and trash on top of it onto the grassy earth beneath you and be on your gas-guzzling way.
"You're Going to Be a Mother"
Even as Peggy got bigger and bigger in the first season, many fans did not see her unacknowledged pregnancy coming – and neither did Peggy herself. When it was finally revealed that she was in fact about to give birth to the spawn of Pete Campbell, the sight of her doubled over in pain and terror made for one of the series' most heartbreaking shockers.
Joan is Raped by Her Own Fiancé
One of the show's strongest women was raped at Sterling Cooper, the place she feels most in control and independent, by her own miserable, loser fiancé. It was a horrific moment and certainly the worst thing we've ever seen happen to a female character on this show – or perhaps any other.
A Stranger on a Train Calls Don "Dick Whitman"
The mystery that unfolded for two seasons was kicked off simply enough, on a commuter train where a man jubilantly came up to Don and clearly recognized him as his old buddy, Dick Whitman. No one knew where it was going at the time, but everybody knew that that stranger was not mistaken, and thus, the already significant intrigue of Don Draper was kicked up to 11 in mere seconds.
