'The Office': A Nice Day for a Strange Wedding

Pam and Jim exchange "I Dos"
NBC/Byron Cohen

As we've said before, Jim and Pam both have jerky tendencies, but together, they somehow work. Last night's big "Office" wedding episode really illustrated that. After a gross prologue involving almost the entire staff vomiting at the their desks (kicked off by Pam's morning sickness in reaction to Dwight's hard-boiled egg lunch), the future Mr. And Mrs. Halpert called a meeting in the conference room about the wedding, and she basically told people to behave themselves or not to come. But didn't she know Michael had decreed that attending the wedding was mandatory somewhere along the line? At least two nights in a hotel and a five-hour drive is a lot to have forced upon someone, so maybe she didn't need to be so rude. Maybe the economy is getting to me, but I didn't feel a whole lot of sympathy towards Pam as she headed off for her nuptials.

That said, once they finally got to Niagara Falls, things mostly picked up and I actually enjoyed a lot of the wedding -- well, aside from most everything that Michael did. The only moments of his that I found funny were him flirting with Pam's mom over an apricot-flavored snack and his speech to Pam's grandmother. Otherwise, he was kind of a train wreck. It wasn't particularly funny that he forgot to book a room or that he spent the night with the ice machine, nor was his painting of the couple as a wedding gift, but I would have forgiven, or at least overlooked, all of that had it not been for his disgusting speech about sex in front of the family. I know that Michael is inappropriate and doesn't have that filter that normal people have, but this was a little too much for even him. And him starting the "Forever" wedding dance during the processional was annoying and it just went on for far, far too long.

But again, I liked most of the rest of the wedding episode happenings. My favorite moments:

  • Jim's brothers joking that their wives should work out to look as hot as Pam. Not appropriate at all, but definitely the frat boy humor we've come to expect from them.
  • Jim's touching "I knew I was waiting for my wife" speech at the rehearsal dinner.
  • Oscar's annoyance that Pam's sister thought that Kevin was his boyfriend.
  • Andy tearing up during Jim's speech at the rehearsal dinner.
  • Pam's little mental pictures of memorable moments.
  • Jim cutting off his tie so that he could match Pam's torn veil.
  • Pam being forced to take Andy to the emergency room for a torn scrotum. Every bride has her crosses to bear on her wedding day. (Trust me.)
  • Dwight outsmarting Michael about sharing a room.
  • Meredith not seeing Jim and Pam run off because she was smoking her afternoon cigar.
  • Dwight kicking the bridesmaid he hooked up with in the face while they were dancing.
  • Kevin's shoes being thrown away by the hotel staff, and the subsequent tissue-box footwear.
  • Dwight and the turtle.
  • The actual wedding on the Maid of the Mist shown without words as the edit jumped back and forth to the "real" wedding. Nice. I might have gotten a little teary-eyed even.
  • And Jim's Plans A, B and C.

In general, Jim saved this episode with his sweet demeanor -- even his accidental revelation of Pam's pregnancy during his speech was totally charming. It totally reminded me of the good things that I liked about him way back when he was just a goofball mooning over the receptionist and pulling pranks. His gestures made Pam a whole lot more likable during the actual wedding, too, so by the end, I was really genuinely happy for them when they were standing in their brief moment of calm underneath the waterfalls. It will be interesting to see the aftermath of this, especially if Pam learns about the Michael-and-her-Mom thing, but I'm just hoping that there are more cute moments of them as a couple and less of her bossing around people at the office. Especially as her crazy pregnancy hormones really start kicking in.
