    • 'The Voice' tops 'The X Factor' in ratings war

Two rival singing competition shows went head-to-head last night, but only one could win. And even the star power of Britney Spears on Season 2's premiere of "The X Factor" was not enough to overcome the draw of NBC's rival show -- and rival pop diva Christina Aguilera -- on "The Voice."

According to preliminary Nielsen ratings, an average 8.5 million Americans tuned in to watch Spears and singer Demi Lovato's debut, alongside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid. The episode dropped about 3.5 million viewers from the show's 2011 opener, which is surprising given the aggressive publicity by Spears and Cowell. Spears reportedly earned $15 million to do the show.

See Britney dishing out tough critiques:

As for "The Voice," 10.7 million watched a third episode Wednesday.

      Cowell can't be pleased.

Last week, he slammed NBC execs for using "dirty tricks" to steal his viewers. NBC was originally planning to air "The Voice" on Monday and Tuesday but changed course at the last minute, adding

    • Former 'America's Next Top Model' contestant called a 'full-blown meth addict'

Mark Mainz/Getty Images for TV Guide, CBSOnce-aspiring model Jael Strauss, who appeared as a contestant on "America's Next Top Model," is battling an ugly drug addiction to methamphetamine. In an effort to save her, the ex-model's family reached out to Dr. Phil.

The family and the former cast member appear on Thursday's show, where her shocking transformation as a "full-blown meth addict," as Dr. Phil puts it, is revealed. The former model looks prematurely aged, her skin pockmarked.

Once a band promoter in Hollywood, Strauss appeared on Cycle 8 of the show back in 2007. The 22-year-old made it to the finals and was eliminated after her Cover Girl commercial failed to impress the judges.

Watch a Yahoo! TV interview with Jael right after her elimination from "ANTM" in 2007:

The season took place in Australia, and Strauss made her mark as the model who was pushed into a pool by 50 Cent after apparently annoying him at a party, then gossiping with Nicole Richie, who told her another contestant hated her.

    • NBC shamed in social media for failing to cover 9/11 moment of silence

Savannah Guthrie interviews Kris Jenner on the "Today" showNBC stuck with its national programming instead of observing the moment of silence at the time of the 9/11 attacks that are normally observed on this date.

While national viewers of "Good Morning America" and "CBS This Morning" aired the somber remembrance, "Today" aired Savannah Guthrie's interview with "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" mom Kris Jenner on her breast implants.

New York City's local affiliate WNBC did cut in with local programming covering the moment of silence, coordinated with New York and D.C. starting at 8:46 a.m. ET, but the national programming stayed with Jenner.

      9/11 Moment of Silence observed:

In the video, Guthrie announces that it's 8:45, one minute before the moment of silence begins, then launches into the interview. As the Kardashian mom told Guthrie of her decision to film her breast implant operation, Jenner and Guthrie seem unaware of the sober event happening at that moment. Jenner jokes about changing her breast implants, saying, "The reason

    • Gym denies Gabrielle Douglas's racism claims

Gabrielle Douglas, the Olympic gold-medal gymnast, says she was the target of racist bullying at the gym where she first trained. She revealed the claims to Oprah Winfrey on her OWN show, "Oprah's Next Chapter." The Virginia gym, Excalibur Gymnastics, has fired back, denying the allegations.

Gabrielle -- who says she prefers to be called by her full name, even though her fans call her Gabby -- eventually moved to Iowa to train with Shawn Johnson's Olympic coach. The Olympian told Winfrey in the interview that the girls at the Virginia gym called her a "slave."

Gabrielle recalled, "One of my teammates was like, 'Can you scrape the bar?' And they were like, 'Why doesn't Gabby do it, she's our slave?'" She added, "I definitely felt isolated, I felt 'Why am I deserving this? Is it because I'm black?'"

The 16-year-old said she finally left the gym when she was 14: "I was scared at my old gym to show my potential… I was just holding back."

    • Happy birthday, Shelley Long: The 'Cheers' actress turns 63

Shelley Long, then and now (Paramount Television/Everett Collection, Ryan Miller/Getty Images)Raise a glass to toast Shelley Long on her 63rd birthday. The actress will always be known for playing prissy and pretentious waitress Diane Chambers, who had an on-and-off romance with the bartender Sam (Ted Danson) on the hit sitcom "Cheers."

The actress went on to star as Carol Brady in the "Brady Bunch" movies and on TV shows like "8 Simple Rules" and "Boston Legal," and she has a recurring role as Jay's ex-wife DeDe in the ABC hit "Modern Family."

Long may be as well known for leaving "Cheers" as being on it. At the height of the '80s sitcom's popularity, Long said "ciao" to "Cheers."

So what led Long to leave? After an Emmy and two Golden Globes for the role, the actress made a controversial decision back in 1987 to depart the show when her contract ended to pursue a film career and spend more time with her daughter. She went on to star in "Outrageous Fortune," "Hello Again," and "Troop Beverly Hills," which never measured up to the same level of success as her TV

Grammer tells Winfrey how it went down, as she sums up his past relationship: "You already knew your marriage was over. It had already gone on too long, according to you, because it was over when it started. It was a facade. But you lacked the courage to come home and say

    • Why Kyra Sedgwick decided to end 'The Closer'

"The Closer" is coming to a close. Kyra Sedgwick, who plays deputy chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, will leave the hit show, and the main character, behind. TNT obviously would like to keep the show going; they're even spinning off the rest of the "Closer" cast (minus Kyra) into a new series, "Major Crimes." So why would an actress leave a popular, female-driven drama? We track down the clues.

Sedgwick wants to do other things. Her character, Brenda Leigh Johnson, was so good at her job, it inspired Sedgwick to change hers. Time after time, usually by the end of each show, the crack deputy chief solves the case. After all, the show is a procedural, as the actress told TVLine, "and I think that probably fit into my decision a bit. Even though there's all this amazing character stuff, that's still what it is."

She didn't make the decision lightly. The star told TVLine, "I thought about it for about a year, and it finally came down to the fact that I really want to do other things,
