photo courtesy of FoxDavid Cook parted ways with BMG last year--after releasing two albums for the label--announcing the split backstage at last season's "American Idol" top four results show. But the Season 7 "Idol" winner, who's now 30 years old and recently relocated to Nashville, is hardly laying low: He's back on "Idol" this week to play this season's top four results show, and today he released his comeback single, ironically titled "Laying Me Low."

Did Midas Whale get knocked out?This week, "The Voice" began its dreaded Knockout Rounds, the awkward and at times unfair process that'd determine which 16 semifinalists (four from each team, as opposed to last season, when it was five per team) would move on to Season 4's Live Playoffs. The contestants all sang solo songs of their own choosing, squaring off against their own team members in sudden-death showdowns, and none of them knew whom they'd be competing against until the very last minute.

I am sure once they found out, however, they were as shocked--or annoyed--as I was.

Last night, nobody got eliminated on "American Idol," but that doesn't mean my "The Day After" co-host Matt Whitfield and I have nothing talk about today. From Candice Glover showing some actual personality after her fangirlish surprise encounter with Drake, to the judges' blatant Amber Holcomb-pimping spectacularly backfiring, to Stefano's failed comeback and Lee DeWyze's surprisingly successful one, there's still much to discuss. Who went home? No one!Regular "American Idol" viewers--and yes, there are still some out there--know that the much-ballyhooed Judges' Save was kept around all season, in an in-case-of-emergency-break-glass, backup-plan sort of way, to ensure that none of this season's favored female contestants went home before the boys. Or at least not before Lazaro Arbos. But eventually the Judges' Save expired, unused this season (an "Idol" first), leaving producers with a whole extra week to fill before the May 15-16 finale.

So, what to do with that bonus week? Run a "Best of Adam Lambert" clip show? Air a "Where Are They Now?" special hosted by Brian Dunkleman and Kara DioGuardi? Host a PPV wrestling match between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, to raise funds to appease (probably under-served) advertisers? All of these might've been good ratings-boosters, but no. Instead, producers decided they will DO THE TOP FOUR SHOW ALL OVER AGAIN.

Last night, the "American Idol" top four show had a "One-Hit Wonders" theme, but there were more hits than misses, as the contestants picked mostly lame song choices that not only were missed opportunities to show some creativity and personality, but technically weren't even one-hit wonders at all.

This week, one of the themes for the top four "Idol" finalists was "one-hit wonders," and even though most of the contestants really didn't adhere to that theme, sadly, Sarah's viewing-party recipe is still inspired by recent food fads. "In honor of the nation's obsession with everything cupcake, I went with a savory chicken pot pie cupcake!" she explains. Enjoy!

photo: Michael Yarish/FoxDuring the second hour of "American Idol" this Wednesday, the top four girls sang "One-Hit Wonders," a theme voted for by fans. (I admit I may have voted for that theme a couple times. And by "a couple," I mean, like, 67.) Excitedly I sat in front of the TV with my popcorn and boxed wine, ready for a delightful evening of Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" (a great song choice for anyone who's ever been in the bottom three), Buckner & Garcia's "Pac-Man Fever," Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy," Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair," "One Night in Bangkok," "Who Let the Dogs Out," or, of course, the best one-hit wonder ever, White Town's "Your Woman." Yes, I should've known from my years of "Idol"-watching that the contestants would disappoint me and either pick the fuddy-duddiest songs imaginable, or just ignore the theme altogether. But still, I dared to dream.
