Why Is ‘Spring Breakers’ Obsessed with Britney Spears?

Britney Spears (Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez (Lester Cohen/Wireimage)Though Britney Spears hasn't graced the big screen since 2002's "Crossroads," she's all over the new crime thriller starring Selena Gomez and James Franco.

"Spring Breakers" premiered on Thursday in Hollywood, and while the film's stars, including Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson, make for good eye candy in the flick, Britney's presence looms large.

The film, about a group of college girls who steal to fund their spring break shenanigans, features two singalongs to Britney's music: the first has the female cast belt out "Baby One More Time" a capella.

The second is Franco's moment, as his Southern rapper character, Alien, plays the Spears ballad "Everytime" on baby grand piano.

The scene calls for Hudgens, Benson, and actress Rachel Korine to watch him croon. The scantily clad ladies dance softly, brandishing shot guns and neon pink ski masks. It's bizarre to say the least.

A rep for Spears did not return an email requesting comment on the use of her hits. From what Twitter tells, however, she's fine with the Harmony Korine-directed film pulling from her catalog.

Spears sent that tweet with a YouTube clip attached, featuring some of the girls singing "Baby One More Time" at the film's SXSW panel.

"They're the kind of girls that get down with Britney," Korine told omg! on the red carpet. Clearly.

An afterparty followed the screening at nearby Hollywood nightclub Emerson Theater, where stars like Casey Affleck, Julie Delpy and Ashley Tisdale came to celebrate.

We also ran into Steven Dorff. The man who played Britney's love interest in the original music video for "Everytime." A coincidence? Maybe. Or perhaps proof that it ain't spring break without Spears ... at least in spirit.
