Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis star in "Vegas," a drama inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Sin City in the 1960s. Lamb wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption, and it's intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb's command as a military police officer during World War II, the mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker — and so begins Lamb's clash with Vincent Savino, a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own. Assisting Lamb in keeping law and order are two deputies: his diplomatic, even-keeled brother, Jack, and his charming but impulsive son, Dixon. Ambitious Assistant District Attorney Katherine O'Connell, who grew up on the ranch next to the Lambs, also lends a hand in preserving justice. In "Vegas," two powerful men — Lamb and Savino — are engaged in a fierce battle for control of the budding oasis ... and for both of them, folding is not an option.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Looking a little like Harrison Ford and sounding a bit like Tommy Lee Jones has never served Dennis Quaid more. Like Jones in "The Fugitive," Quaid's Sheriff Lamb is an expert lawman in possession of both bark and brains. And like Ford in the "Indiana Jones" series, he's a semi-reluctant hero with his own selfish motivations -- and he isn't afraid to break the rules. Plus, Michael Chiklis is back where he belongs: playing a badass. (Hopefully this show will erase all memories of "No Ordinary Family.")
FALL TV MATH
"Bugsy" + "Magic City" = "Vegas"
DID YOU KNOW?
The pilot for "Vegas" was partially shot in Las Vegas … New Mexico. The small town with the same name as Sin City is no stranger to film crews: It's hosted several Western TV shows and movies over the years, and even such cowboy-free films as "Due Date," "Paul," and "Red Dawn." After the show was picked up, a $1.8 million replica of downtown Las Vegas's famous Freemont Street was constructed in Santa Clarita, California.
