The second episode of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was so exciting, what with a trip to Peru and the mysterious weapon of mass destruction, that they really didn't need Samuel L. Jackson to pop up post-credits. But who's going to say no to a bonus scene with Marvel's WWII veteran/superspy Nick Fury? Jackson checked his F-bombs at the door and reprised his role as Fury— eye patch! — to chew out Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) for his team's mistreatment of the giant airplane so early into the mission.
By now, Marvel fans know that a Marvel film isn't over until it's over, staying to the end of the credits for a bonus scene. Jackson, in fact, made his first appearance as Fury at the end of "Iron Man." The end of "Iron Man 2" revealed the discovery of Thor's hammer. And "The Avengers" had two scenes in the credits. Audiences met the purple-faced villain Thanos in the first, and the second shows the beleaguered superhero team gnoshing on shawarma.
This time around, you didn't need to be a Marvel megafan to realize that Fury is very much superior to Coulson. The scene started with Fury and Coulson touring the ravaged giant decked-out airplane. "Really, really, Coulson," Fury sneered, "Six days. It took you only six days to take a completely renovated piece of state-of-the-art machinery and turn it into scrap?"
Fury and Coulson's verbal Ping-Pong touched on authority, the cost of the plane, and the quality of the bar before Fury threatened to "downgrade your ass to a Winnebago" and ordered him to keep it simple, as in "no modifications like a damn fish tank!" Coulson nodded with his tail between his legs, and when Fury marched offscreen, Coulson turned mousy and canceled the fish tank he'd ordered. And wasn't it fun to see Coulson so nervous and tongue-tied for a change? Let's hope Fury comes back.
Other episode highlights include the peek into suit-and-tie Coulson's romantic history of mixing business and pleasure. To say that he had bad taste in women once upon a time is an understatement. We saw Skye (Chloe Bennet) prove herself with the team by sealing off a giant, killer hole in the plane by blowing up a rescue raft. Genius. And then we saw her secretly text-pledge her allegiance to Rising Tide. Grr.
