MacKenzie Bourg was an early Team Cee Lo frontrunner on "The Voice" Season 3, winning over coaches and viewers alike with his winsome guitar-pop covers of "Pumped Up Kicks," "Call Me Maybe," and "What Makes You Beautiful." Adam Levine even once shockingly described MacKenzie as "an American idol." The night of Mac's Blind Audition, I actually predicted he would win the entire season. And I'm still a little surprised that he didn't.Read More »from MacKenzie Bourg Brings His Voice, “Story” To Yahoo!

A few weeks ago on "American Idol's" Oklahoma City episode, an intrepid ventriloquist named Halie Hilburn auditioned with Oscar, her trusty dog-puppet sidekick. Oscar certainly seemed to have "Idol" potential, but unfortunately, he was robbed: Halie followed the judges' stern advice to go solo, and she left her felt friend behind in Oklahoma (IN A DUMPSTER, yet) and went to Hollywood alone. And then, thanks to the totally A.D.D. editing this "Idol" season, viewers never saw Halie again.Read More »from Dumped ‘Idol’ Puppet Oscar Resurfaces As Rapper

Last night, 10 of this season's "American Idol" boys competed in Vegas, and with the exception of Phil Oakey/Pete Burns-esque androgyne JDA and "awkward turtle" Charlie Askew (who were polarizing, but at least interesting), it was a pretty sedate show of boring balladry. Maybe Season 12 will be a girls' season after all, just like Nigel Lythgoe and Randy Jackson have been insisting.
Watch me and my "The Day After" co-host Matt Whitfield dish (and disagree) about last night's Vegas performances, and feel free to weigh in with your own opinions in the comments section below.Read More »from American Idol, The Day After: Vegas Rounds, Night 2 Dish

Shaggy Scottish rocker Terry McDermott made his mark on Season 3 of "The Voice" belting out hairy Camaro classics from the Great American '70s/'80s Rock Songbook (Journey, Boston, Foreigner, et al). But his new original track, "Pictures," evokes the mid-2000s Britrock of bands like Travis, Embrace, Starsailor, and of course his own former Geffen group, Driveblind. It's very British, and it's bloody good.

photo: FoxAfter an excellent start to the “American Idol” Vegas rounds this Wednesday with a batch of 10 girls, the show returned to the Cirque du Soleil theater on Thursday to do it all over again with 10 boys. And what a diverse group of boys it was. Performing in front of a live studio audience—a first for “Idol’s” top 40 semifinals—the male contestants ran the gamut from conservative country to old-school R&B, from Spanglish Beyonce to a Pete Burns/Phil Oakey/Prince clone named Josh "JDA" Davila, who gave possibly THE most outrageous “Idol” performance of all time. And interestingly, there was nary a guitar-wielding Lee DeWyze or Phillip Phillips clone in sight. Seemingly determined to ensure that a girl wins this season—or at least that a “WGWG” doesn’t—the show’s powers-that-be stacked the deck with some very atypical contestants this year.
And the most atypical was gender-bending JDA, of course. Rocking an outfit that was sparklier, gothier, and girlier than what many of the femaleRead More »from ‘American Idol’ Vegas Rounds, Part 2: The Guys Glorify Weirdness
