photo courtesy of Sony PicturesMuch attention has centered on Sparkle, the upcoming film starring Season 6 "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, ever since Jordin's co-star Whitney Houston tragically died in February. Now the trailer for the film--featuring the first acting role for Jordin and, sadly, the last for Whitney--has premiered exclusively on Yahoo! Movies, and it looks like both ladies were perfectly cast.
In the remake of a 1976 movie about a '60s Detroit girl group, Jordin plays Sparkle, one of three singing sisters who is in love with the trio's manager, portrayed by Derek Luke. Whitney plays the girls' mother, Emma, a failed soul singer who fears that her starry-eyed daughters will follow in her own ill-fated footsteps.
But in the trailer's final scene, Whitney/Emma is shown pep-talking Jordin/Sparkle, telling her: "I always knew you had the gift. It makes me feel like I've done something right. Don't lose it." These words take on deeper, sadder meaning considering the real-life troubles Whitney had with her own gift after her voice was ravaged by drug use; I imagine there won't be a dry eye in any movie house when that scene runs on the big screen, starting August 17.
