‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ vs. ‘Dance Moms’: Which Is the Guiltier Pleasure?

Are pageant moms or dance moms more awful? (Hillary Kurtz/TLC, Scott Gries/Lifetime Television)Are pageant moms or dance moms more awful? (Hillary Kurtz/TLC, Scott Gries/Lifetime Television)Say what you will about the parents who parade their children around in intense competitions that may or may not be age-appropriate, but in terms of entertainment, it's hard to argue that the TV shows about them aren't at least a little intriguing, if not shamefully enjoyable. TLC's "Toddlers & Tiaras" has had a chokehold on this market since early 2009, but after a strong premiere season of Lifetime's "Dance Moms," we think it's necessary to pit these two shows against each other. Just know that when we say "winner," we mean which show we would rather watch, given the battle.

    Format
For starters, it's really easy to jump into an episode of "T&T." Each episode, we meet a few new pageant hopefuls and join them in their journey to the competition. But if you try to watch a standalone episode of "Dance Moms," you'll find yourself asking questions like, "Why does that woman have a pyramid of children's faces?" and "Who is this 'Cathy' person everyone is talking about?"

Winner: As TV junkies, we say "Dance Moms." Way more rewarding!

    Insufferable Adults
Ironically, for a show with the word "Moms" right in the title, "Dance Moms" is actually light on the controlling parents. At least compared with the stage mothers on "T&T," who make their children wear fake teeth, take them to the tanning salon, smother them in makeup and dress them up as prostitutes. However, "Dance Moms" has Abby Lee Miller of the Abby Lee Dance Company, a terrible, controlling woman, and Cathy, who is a crazy dance teacher herself and the mother of a ridiculously overworked child.

Winner: Abby does have her redeeming moments, like creating interesting pool games involving watermelons, but the parents on "T&T" have taken society to brave new lows.

See the infamous "Toddlers & Tiaras" girl dressed as "Pretty Woman":

    Disregard for Other Cultures
If you meet enough delusional parents, you are bound to hear a whole lot of shockingly inappropriate and tasteless racial remarks. Our favorite example from "Dance Moms" was when Abby insisted that Nia, and only Nia, must learn all the "ethnic" dances if she wants to get ahead in this world. The result: an Afro wig, animal prints, and a basically danceless routine called "LaQueefa."

Winner: "Dance Moms," because Nia's mother, Holly, at least addresses Abby's behavior. The "T&T" moms just plain get away with faking horrifying Asian accents.

    Week-to-Week Conflicts
On both shows, it's pretty much the same every week: "T&T" has the battle for Ultimate Grand Supreme, while the "Dance Moms" girls always have a new competition ahead of them. The devil, of course, is in the details of each: Will today's toddler see a wolf mask seconds before her set and cry onstage? Which way will Abby set up Chloe to fail?

Winner: Both can be trite and repetitive at worst, explosive and frustrating to the parent at best. Draw.

Abby takes the girls toy shopping in this "Dance Moms" bonus clip:

    Moments of Truth
When it comes to actual competitions, you get lots of little snippets from "T&T" hopefuls, many of which are pretty cute (assuming you don't think about the process behind them). Abby's dance routines range from really skillful to downright tacky -- at best, it's fun in a downgraded "Black Swan" kind of way.

Winner: "T&T," because the under-1-year-old category gets us every time.

Amount of Shame Felt After Watching
"T&T" can be extremely cruel at times, and we have seen enough children's tears to last a lifetime. And we hate that by watching "Dance Moms," we are, in a way, supporting the Abby Lee Dance Studio. Shudder.

Winner: "Dance Moms," because if we tell someone we watch it, we most often hear a "Never heard of it" response. There's no escaping the exposure of "T&T."

"Toddlers & Tiaras" airs Wednesdays at 10pm on TLC; "Dance Moms" airs Wednesdays at 10pm on Lifetime.

the kids are just kids you can't blame them, and also i kind of like the coach abby she goes overboard sometimes but she is an awesome coach, look at what she has helped those girls acomplish, but the moms at least most of them are really more childish than the children, i think they act so foolish most of them have no class at all, at least abby is teaching them what they need to know, in that business they have to be tough, abby is a great coach and the girls are so soo talented but the moms are trash at least most of them

I think T and T is worse, because nothing positive comes out of pageants except for snottiness, money, and more snottiness. At least in Dance Moms they are learning to PROFFESIONALLY act and conduct themselves.

The stress they put these kids through is nothign short of child abuse

Sad that these shows pass as entertainment. Just shows that programmers only care about one thing.....money. Whatever happened to promoting good values, showing proper parenting and not using child abuse as a way to drive up advertising fees!?!?!?!?! Sad.

i have never watched "dance moms" and i have only watched one "t&t" episode, but the message that the mothers on t&t are sending to their daughters is DISGUSTING. absolutely horrifying. what kind of women are these little girls going to grow into? and it seems to me from the one episode that i saw the moms on t&t are usually overweight, physically unattractive women who are living vicariously through their daughters. utterly selfish!

Any parent that would keep a child up for 19 hours a day and then feed them Mountain Dew to keep them awake so they can perform, should be shot. Why isn't this child abuse? Sleep deprivation and forcing sugar and caffeine down a two year old child? What people won't do for a dollar amazes me. This show should be shut down, and the children put in better homes than they are in.

The mothers of these children are a a " trip ". The living of their lives through their children may harm the children later in life.

I think the better comparison would be Little Miss Perfect and Dance Moms. You got that creepy guy who ran Little Miss Perfect and then you have Abby the dance instructor. Both of them creepy and wrong in their own right.

Both of these shows disgust me. These moms are NUTS to subject their children to this and should have them taken away by cps.

turning young girls into sluts; the show should be banned from television

Both are disgusting examples of child abuse. I want to cry for what those innocent children endure at the hands of delusional parents. Having seen a couple episodes of both, I refuse to watch either of them ever again.

News flash...neither is a pleasure, guilty or otherwise!

T &T is a train wreck. I watched one episode and my jaw was on the floor a majority of the time. The above clip; that was disgusting and horrendous. Not to mention the lady spending $4000 on a dress and hiring a woman full time to work with a 18 month old child. Oh well their money. Only one mother had a good attitude and the one little girls father was a good sport. I just know I wouldn't do it.There seems to be too much room for error and the return on the investment is pretty low. Maybe the age limit should be for 1st graders and above.

I am a professional dance teacher and studio owner. The show disgusts me...this woman is an example of everything a dance instructor/choreographer SHOULD NOT BE. Please don't watch...no audience = no show.

From the previews I have seen, both of these shows feature some degree of child abuse. Regardless of which is a "guiltier pleasure," I will not watch or support either!

I think Dance Moms should be picketed for child abuse. The language, insults and screaming shown in front of the girls, and Abby singling out one girl to embarrass in front of the others is cruel. The girls being forced to dance even when they are sick. I find it ludicrous that a woman who can't even see her feet teaches dance. After watching the first couple of episodes I refuse to watch it or support it in any way. It should be taken off the air.

I think this is out and out child abuse--and we wonder where pedophiles get their ideas. Shame on these pathetic parents and the net works that air these shows!
    • Cindy  •  7 months ago
I wouldn't let my kids be talked to like Abby talks to the dancers either, but she is into the competitive dancing, and it's a sport. Have you ever heard how athletic coaches talk to boys in sports? Or worse yet there are always those parents berating their own kids and other people's kids from the sidelines and before and after games at home. Once it becomes a competition, the kids are just pawns.
      • Sandy 7 months ago
I'm sure we can agree that it is WRONG, no matter what adult it comes from; a coach, a teacher, and instructor, a parent, or a stranger. It is never OK to berate children like this!
