‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Roger Craig’s Big Double Gamble

Last night, Roger Craig won the 2011 "Jeopardy!" Tournament of Champions. He was helped along on Monday night, when he found two Daily Doubles in a row and made them "true Daily Doubles" by risking everything both times, a feat Best Week Ever calls "The ballsiest 60 seconds of 'Jeopardy'-playing in history." It is pretty impressive! I would not have gotten (at least) the first question right:

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

I SAW ROGER LAST YEAR ON JEOPARDY....THE GUY IS FAST WITH THE BUZZER, GUTSY & JUST PLAIN SMART! GOOD FOR HIM!!!!

He looks just like any other dullard with his suit and tie. But inside, lurks the heart of a tiger, just waiting to spring on unsuspecting prey. Add to that his undoubtedly high intelligence, and you've got a winner in anyones league. Great going.

If an idividual dresses wel and has self respect, wears a suit and tie, why would you call him a dullard. Thumbs up for being well groomed and dressed.

      Trivia does pay!

You have to know the answers AND buzz in before the others. Roger did the smart thing -- he'd buzz in before he knew the answer, then took the allotted time to think about the question.

The trick is to buzz in and then hope you know the answer.

You're right; Now that I think about it.

The key to winning on Jeopardy is to lead BEFORE Final. This guy knows how to win. I think Alex mentioned he already held the single day total.

I guess it seems like it should be amazing, but I've wondered for YEARS why this hasn't happened sooner. Hello!! It's the Tournament of Champions!! The reason any of these people are here is because THEY KNOW all of these questions!! Yet, usually in these tournaments we are treated to players who play far too cautiously and have absolutely horrible Final Jeopardy betting strategies if they are not already out in front.

That's impressive. Addressing other comments, I have three different friends who have been on Jeopardy (with mixed results). They all say the same thing: timing the buzzer is the most important thing. That's why the computer so easily beat up Ken Jennings and the other champ: they knew the answers but couldn't get in.

Jeopardy is one of the few, if not only shows, on "commerical/TV", verse "Public TV", that actually require the use of your "brain". It's really fun to watch, and one of the few shows my teenagers will actually watch that requires them to see that there is more to "knowledge", than knowing how to win at some online video game.

I would currently only put CBS's "60 Minutes" in the category of TV that actually "teaches" you something you did not know before, and perhaps the "Discovery Channel" for nature shows.

I am someone who generally believes in "free-markets" in terms of business. That said, television is still the medium of communication which most impacts the largest group of Americans. If we just allow "free market" TV, we will have (100 reality TV shows) (100 Talk Shows where people "reveal" that their 3 babies all have different fathers) and (100 sports programs where men beat the "XX OO"s out of eachother...) and we call that "Entertainment".

America needs to convince people that "smart" and "learning" about a wide variety of topics has value. Jeopardy does that. If I have to watch Jay Leno interview (1) more person on the streets of Los Angeles; show them a map of North America without "names", and watch them unable to identify where on the map are "Canada" and "Alaska"......I'm really gonna lose it.

      Are we really "collectively"......this dumb?

A few years ago I worked with a woman who said she would not be able to find the United States on a globe or a map, that she had no idea what it looks like. And this woman has two young boys...heaven help them if they need help with their homework!

What a terrific player....and how many times have you EVER WITNESSED a player GOING-FOR-BROKE on "consecutive" Daily Doubles as he did. Now, I want to see him paired against KEN JENNINGS -and- WATSON!

this was one of the most exciting tournaments! Roger was something else. When does he have the chance to read & retain such info! incredible fella
