‘How I Met Your Mother’: Last Night’s Episode Raises Some Innocent Questions

Did ANYONE see this coming? (TV.com)Last night's Thanksgiving episode of "How I Met Your Mother" — which was written by series co-creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, which should have alerted me right up top that it was probably going to contain a major plot development that would reverberate throughout the season — found Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel) considering a move from Manhattan to Long Island, and Ted (Josh Radnor) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) musing about becoming bro-parents: adopting a baby together, while maintaining their platonic friendship. But it wasn't until the last moment of the episode that we understood what made Robin (Cobie Smulders) — who'd spent the half-hour attempting, with increasing hysteria, to dissuade Marshall and Lily from moving — the pivot point for these two stories. If you haven't seen the episode and don't want to be spoiled, do not watch this clip.

As you might expect, both I and my esteemed colleague Lindsay had some Innocent Questions about this episode.

    1. Lindsay wants to know, is "How I Met Your Mother" trying to compress the entire Rachel Green storyline from the first eight seasons of "Friends" into Robin's arc since this season of "HIMYM" premiered? She's changing careers, she's talking about what a "mess" she is, and now she's accidentally pregnant by (it seems) the ex that (it seems) she'll never entirely get over? I mean, okay, if you're going to steal, steal from the best, but still. None of this is new!

    2. Robin's conviction that she never wanted to get married, never mind have kids, was the whole reason she and Ted broke up in Season 2. So now just because she happens to get pregnant, is the show going to demand that we believe that Robin is going to abandon her entire life's plan to have this baby?

2a. By which I guess I mean, are the producers of "HIMYM" aware that there is a legal procedure available to pregnant women who don't want to have babies?

2b. And if they are aware, will Robin become the first sitcom character to terminate a pregnancy since...I guess I have to go all the way back to Maude (Bea Arthur)?

    3. Where was Kevin (Kal Penn), Robin's boyfriend? I know couples don't always spend Thanksgiving together, but did anyone even mention him in the episode at all?

    4. Another great question from Lindsay: Is the fact that Barney and Kevin, either of whom could, presumably, potentially have fathered Robin's baby, are different races going to lead to "hilarious" business around the baby's race, if she does have it?

4a. Or (Lindsay again) is Kevin going to turn out to have had a vasectomy? More "Maury"-worthy comedy!

    5. Granted, we learned when Barney's brother James (Wayne Brady) was about to adopt that babies are Barney's Kryptonite, but still, the response of this raging womanizer to the loss of the only woman he's apparently ever loved is to get broody? I get that the point of that was for it to pay off with Robin's surprise announcement, but still, it barely scans with what we know of Barney's character.

    6. If Robin does end up having this baby, then what are we to make of the fact that all the other times Old Ted (voice of Bob Saget) told his kids about Robin's child-free convictions, neither of them mentioned their "cousin Barnette" (or whatever)?

    7. Has Ted ever been more extraneous?

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

I think the show should be retitled "Why We Killed Our Father" -- can you imagine asking your dad how he met your mom and hearing all this drivel for the next six years without getting your simple question answered?

How old are the kids? Are they twins? Is "Aunt Robin" actually the natural mother? Does Ted never marry, but raise the kids as a single Dad after he adopts them when Robin moves to New Zealand in pursuit her dream job? Which has become less interesting: HIMYM or 2.5 Men?

Why does older Ted sound just like Danny Tanner from Full House?

Because it is Danny Tanner from Full House.

I'm so ready to quit on this show. If they don't introduce the mother before the season finale I'm done.

I personally couldn't handle more than 3 seasons of Ted's character...it's time for him to come out...

Never got the appeal of this show. Looks like a 'friends' wannabe....and I was never a big fan of THAT show, either.

I also found it odd that no one mentioned Kevin. And I found it odd that Tom looks like he might be played by a different actor now. I thought it odd two black men adopted 2 white babies, which seems so strange when there are so many more adoptable babies of color out there. What I don't find odd is the possibility of Robin changing her mind about kids. (Has she lived in all the foreign countries old Ted listed for her yet though?) I know plenty of women who swore they would never have kids only to change their minds (some like myself on purpose even). Even so, if she doesn't keep it, I doubt they will risk showing abortion in today's political climate. I hope they go with adoption, because that is not shown as a viable option nearly enough.

Barney's brother was with a white guy when he adopted the first baby years ago. I wasn't really watching last night, more like listening while running around the kitchen so I didn't see who Barney's brother was with - it was a black guy?

Why is it odd that black people adopt white kids? White people adopt black kids all the time. I don't think it matters what color the kids are just as long as they are loved and cared for.

Barney's brother is now with a Latino guy not a black guy. It's Jai Rodriguez from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Barney wouldn't be the first finocchio to womanize for the purpose of denying his gayness. If, however, he ends up being "your mother" I will be very disappointed.

Robin marries Barney. It's been implied many times ever since they broke up. And at their wedding, Ted finally meets the owner of the yellow umbrella, his future wife.

Exactly, don't know why more people haven't picked up on this.

Maybe I'm incorrect, but didn't Old Ted say that Robin and Don eventually get hitched?

I thought that he was going to be her love interest this season.

and why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

and why is it called 'rush hour' when your car just sits there?

I think the father is Barney. Couples are more likely to use birth control than spontaneous hookups. But I think Robin will marry Barney even if Kevin is the father. If she loved Kevin she would have taken him to the hospital the minute he got hurt on the boat.

"Lily's" side profile looks like Lori Singer's from Footloose. whoa. Otherwise, don't care about the show.

This is one of the best shows on TV. I did prefer it before it got heavy, Marshall losing his dad, problems conceiving and now a surprise pregnancy. I feel like I have grown along with this show so I guess the topics have to become more mature.

who knew this sitcom mattered to anyone enough to generate actual questions? mindless entertainment to relax to. wanna worry, watch the news.

Although the show IS fiction, the writing of the show is someone's livelihood, and we have the right to critique it.

This rivals my discourse on Barney and Friends.
