MTV is Making a Reality Show About Rural West Virginian Young People, Of Course

Who will be the Situation and Snooki of the holler? [MTV]After the success of "Jersey Shore," MTV has identified yet another youth culture to exploit celebrate: that of a rural West Virginian town, where "recent college graduates" from different economic situations (some are from "up in the hills" and some are from "in the holler," apparently) will participate in "'Jackass"-like stunts. TV Guide reports that after being wowed by a presentation, the network has ordered 12 episodes of the show, which is called "Buck Wild." If you're wondering whether MTV knows exactly what we're all thinking when we hear they're doing a show about the youth culture of rural Appalachia, this is what MTV programming head David Janollari told TV Guide for their exclusive announcement of "Buck Wild":

"[The show] is so wholeheartedly not making fun of these kids... they have a great sense of humor, and you're drawn to them and this world."

We'll have to wait for the spring thaw for the show to even begin shooting, so don't expect to be drawn into the "Buck Wild" world and pack up all your stuff and move to rural West Virginia until at least next summer or fall. Hey, if for some reason you're one of the young college graduates recruited to appear on this show: it's not too late to do anything else with your life! Because I so wholeheartedly believe they're going to making fun of you. (I mean, what with the stunts, doesn't it kind of sound exactly like the premise of "The Hunger Games"?) At the very least, insist on getting a bunch of money up front, because this show and what comes from it might be your first and last job out of college. Just ask Snooki. (Who yes, is rich. But DO YOU WANT TO BE HER? I rest my case.)

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

MTV just pretends their shows are a reality show but then they set up these scenes that aren't real.. They had this wild party up the road with these underage kids, and I heard they were supplying them alcohol and pot, well it's not like they don't do it anyway, but still, that's wrong. It's going to be a crazier version of Jersey Shore. and yes, I am going to watch it.. lol.. but I already heard alot of it is fake, it's disapointing, for I love these shows.

West Virginia is a beautiful state. I proudly wear my cowboy boots and hat, but that doesn't mean we are "hillbilly's". We are not all "hicks" or "rednecks". We are not stupid, we just like to have fun (:

I'm disheartened by some of the commenters below who don't like telling people they are from West Virginia. I am from West Virginia and now live in Los Angeles. I am excited and proud to educate people about my home state. Many here have not met anyone from West Virginia before. I see this as an opportunity to share stories of our state's natural and cultural beauty. Please don't cower in shame. Live by example! Be an ambassador!

I live in TN now, but was born and raised in WV... I hate that MTV and others always try to make WV look like a bad state. We are not a bunch of "hillbilly's" that dont know anything, give us a break.

Great! Another way to call West Virginian people stupid. Thanks a lot MTV! I just love not being able to tell people where I'm from. I just love stereotypical comments day in and day out. People think I'm uneducated and moronic before they meet me because of stereotypes.

This is some crazy sh**! Why the hell can't they pick on someone else. I'm from West Virginia and i'm proud of where I come from! I moved to colorado a few months back and I don't even want to tell anybbody. Where i'm from..

I think it is so sad that MTV has gone from Music Television...to Moronic Television. Sigh

How many of you West Virginians complaining about this show watch "Jersey Shore" or "The Real Housewives" of wherever or any other show projecting the "reality" of a certain demographic? If so, shut up! It's folks like you who keep these shows in demand. You made your bed, now allow others to laugh at it. . .

This is ridiculous. Yes in fact there are crazy back wood people in wv, but they are in every state. Just bc half the USA don't know that wv is a state instead of plate of va well it is. Some great people are from wv. Very well educated, famous and don't look like the people off wrong turn. Maybe people should research history. I was born and raised in wv. Love it and don't want to live anywhere else. It's the type of place if your friends need help They drop everything and help you out. If someone is broke down on the side of the road someone stops to help. We like to have fun and sometime do some crazy things but they are gonna make it out to be that we are uneducated, nonworking, welfare trash. show the good people and good towns, hard working people.

"First they came for Laguna Beach,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't from Orange County.

Then they came for the Housewives,
      and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a housewife.

Then they made a show called Jersey Shore,
      and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Guido.

Then they came for West Virginia
and there was no one left to speak out for me."

Why is every one fuming? You know they can't find WV on the map. Every time I travel I get asked, "How far's that from Richmond?" by at least 2 out of 3 ppl I tell where I'm from. It seems like the whole country thinks we live in Western Virginia.
      • Joshua 3 months ago
haha yea or they ask how close is that to the beach

Having lived in WV my whole life, it would be great if these types of shows would ever show the REAL people who live here..college educated, not on welfare, responsible parents...there are many of us. I'm sure this show will exploit those who are the exact opposite and try to show others that they define this state. So sad.

i agree! i am born and raised west virginian too and they always want to portray the entire appalachian area in a not-so positive way :/ can't say i won't watch the show tho either.
      • Brittany 3 months ago
Yep, I agree I lived in Clarksburg until i was 16. I live in NC now and everyone thinks we are inbreed and run around bare~foot...I don't understand how people can be so dumb! EVERY SINGLE time someone asks where I'm from they have something stupid to say. Cant really blame them because almost everything they put on tv about WV is horrible, its like they find the biggest, dirtiest rednecks on the planet & then put them on tv!!
      • Megan 3 months ago
I agree! My husband is in the Marine Corps and every time we tell people where we are from they make some kind of joke about how they are surprised that we still have teeth or that we don't have rotten teeth...and the most common joke is asking if we are related. From birth until 12 I lived in Philippi and then we moved to the Eastern Panhandle and yes I seen dirty rednecks before but that is not what our state is made up of! People always say how shocked they are when they hear us talk because we don't have a "hillbilly accent." haha Ridiculous!

      Of course......WE ARE STILL.......The young people....ya know....What they don't know, can't hurt themmm of course.....right?

Screw this show. I'm a West Virginian born and raised and this is just absolutely ridiculous. We're better than that. Absolutely better than this stupid idea of a show. This is just another way to try to make fun of WV, and that I can't tolerate. Boycott this show!!!
      • Taylor 3 months ago
what is its a friggin AWESOME show though? I'm going to give it a chance... I'd rather this show be our example rather than the wonderful whites of west virginia :/

For Satan's sake MTV, can you please just put music back on?

I lived in WV for 8 years. It is beautiful beyond words! The mountains are spectacular and of all the places I have lived (which are many!), WV has the most perfect weather for each season. There are so many different types of trees and animals; it was the perfect place to spend my childhood. Also, the characteristic I hold most dear to my heart, THE PEOPLE are just the sweetest people I have ever encountered. They are so thoughtful, kind, and welcoming. It broke my heart when I moved away to TX (another fantastic state). Best education I recieved was from TVCS in Teays Valley. This depiction is garbage.

Seriously? I'm so sick of this crap we get. We are not inbred, hillbilly, freak shows that need to be shown on some stupid "reality" TV program. This is probably just gonna get people to think we are all a bunch of Jesco White's. I was born and raise in West Virginia, I have a college degree, I have a good job, I'm not on welfare, and I still have all my #$%$ teeth. And I know there are more people like me out there. This is crap and those idiots who go on that show should be ashamed. Of course they are going to be making fun of you!! They are going to be making fun of all of us, that's the #$%$ point!
