‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’: Our Daughters, Ourselves

Watch what happens! With real-life circumstances threatening to make an erstwhile guilty-pleasure like the BH Housewives into something gross and dirty, it's become our responsibility as consumers of reality TV to compartmentalize. Surely, quite a bit of this second season is going to be under the pall of Russell Armstrong's suicide, but between purse dogs, snarky domestic help, and (fingers crossed!) electric-cigarette-puffing psychics, we can learn to have fun again. With this in mind, we're tackling this season's episodes in order from the moments that are most demoralizing to the least demoralizing. Let's get through this together.

    Pretty Demoralizing

We didn't even want to have Taylor be the most awful and uncomfortable housewife of the episode. And she had serious competish this week. But despite our mixed emotions about what Camille said at the tea party (more on that in a second), Taylor's enthusiasm about shutting Camille out was just unseemly. Like Taylor was so happy to have the moral upper hand over someone that she was really enjoying twisting the knife.

And then there was the matter of the birthday party she threw for little Kennedy out in the great outdoors. Because Taylor feels that it's very important that her daughter commune with nature. So long as that nature is filled up with inflatable bouncy castles and mechanical bulls for mommy's drunker friends. The whole afternoon was summed up by Taylor's all-about-me speech, where she said "my daughter" a few times but never actually spoke Kennedy's name.

    Ethically Troublesome

It looks like there's going to be more of this next week, but just for the record: Adrienne Maloof getting all offended because Lisa's daughter's bachelorette party isn't being held at the (Maloof-owned) Palms but instead at the (Lisa's-other-friend-owned) Planet Hollywood is just ridiculous. As often as Adrienne has showed off her disgusting level of wealth this season, engaging in what amounts to million-dollar money grubbing is as tacky as [pick any design element inside Adrienne's mansion].

A Mixed Bag of Complex Emotions

Okay. At the end of last week's episode, we cheered on Camille for stepping up her Season 2 game. But as this episode began, Camille's reasons for snapping at Taylor came into sharper forcus. Basically, she doesn't know if she believes Taylor's claims about abuse from Russell. We're still happy Camille is in the game, but it's really tough to cheer anybody in this kind of a situation.

Of course, we'll take Camille over Kyle, whose immediate reaction to Taylor and Lisa's truce was an utterly ungracious bafflement. Ellen Barkin on "Watch What Happens Live" was right (we will never get tired of typing those words), Kyle thrives on the conflict swirling around her, and can't deal with a truce being brokered that leaves her out of it.

    Relatively Guilt-Free

Poor Lisa was once again stranded on a story island with Kevin Lee, Wedding Godzilla. Our Chi-Chi-Chi-Chi-Chi-est Beverly Hillsian came to Lisa and Pandora's latest wedding-planning session armed with ostentatious scrolls and some giant invitations encased in big pink-satin boxes. Pandora ultimately was captivated by sending out her invites inside "Pandora's Box." Which, if nothing else, reminds you why it's a bad idea to name one's child "Pandora."

    Legitimately Delightful

Taylor's ridiculous birthday party was terrible, but two things were better than six Christmases. One was the presence of Ace Young, former "American Idol" 7th runner-up, erstwhile "Hair" cast member, and one-time heartthrob. Even better than watching Ace flirt with these Beverly Hills doyennes, angling to be the Cedric of Season 2, was the following exchange between Taylor and Kyle:

    Taylor: "Ace Young is here!"

    Kyle: "Who?"

And not for nothing, but Brandi once again completely charmed us as she narrated Ace's stage patter— raising his glass of booze to his crowd of adoring 5-year-olds—and laughed oh-so-appropriately.

We apologize. An error has occurred. Please try again.

NORMAL, grown, adult, non-dulsional women do not behave this way. Anyone who takes this show serioulsy needs their head checked. Normal grwon adult women do not seek attention this way, we are the role models for our families...not one of these so-called housewives has a clue on how to be a housewife....they are ridiclus.
To put your family on some TV show so that you in your mind can think you are some kind of star makes them delusional. I wouldn't want the reputation of any of them....teenage mentalities in their 40's and 50's....I feel sorry for their husbands....good grief could you imagine?! And the way these women talk to their friends....like teenagers....who says the stuff they come up with? Only teenaged girls, or foolish old chicks..

I'm amazed this show gets ratings...

They get ratings from people like you who OBVIOUSLY watch but pretends not to!

The day, the day....I waste my free time watching this show. Isn't it sad that I know so much about these ding bats JUST from the press they get? And it is further saddening how some of you actually look up these so called mature women becasue they have decided they are stars because some producer says so....delusional much? To have cameras shoved in my face to document my PRIVATE life for money?! I'm far more interesting than that....

My TV watching is far and few in hours...as a grown adult NORMAL woman, I have a real job, kids, and grandkids...not much time to be worrring about what these classless women are doing.....not this gal....and Booya...you are far to young to understand, how do I know that? Your handle of Booya says it all. Finally, I don't know where you get from my comment that I have watched thios show ever...I have nothing but disdain for these ladies, so, why would I give them ratings?

Lisa seems like she should be in a Barbara Cartland book with all that pinky frilly stuff. Having all her money and class and witnessing her double dip tableware into food she is about to serve guests (potatoe salad) along with her husband drinking after their dog = I would never eat at her house! Really gross!

Kyle and Kim are two nasty women, really ugly to most people not in their"clique" , Brandi has gone out of her way to be half way civil to these two hags and has been treated like a leper at every turn for her efforts. I rather like Adrienne, how she decorates her home is her business.
      • Melissa 6 months ago
I don't know if it was just the producers' artful editing, but Kyle and Kim were portrayed as the ultimate "mean girls" to Brandi. I haven't seen Adrienne be mean to anyone.

This is a housewives for god sakes. As far as Taylor goes I love her. She is really in a bad place in her life. You know that the weak are the one's who commit suicide and leave the strong here to deal with every day life. If you commit suicide then you are saying that you dont care about anyone but your self and that you are not strong enough to stay and get threw the rought spells. WEAK PEOPLE COMMIT SUICIDE........ THEY CARE ONLY ABOUT THEMSELFS.

Sorry, but Kyle, Lisa and Adrianne are the only three I like out of the whole bunch! They are the only ones I don't feel are "acting" all the time. They speak their minds (which apparently makes a lot of people uncomfortable. . .)

Suicide is a personal choice no one can really "drive a person to suicide"...on that note, more abusive and dead-beat peeps should make that choice as well!
      • soccermom 6 months ago
Apparently you have never lost a loved one to suicide. Keep your uneducated commentary to yourself. Thanks.....

As usual Taylor goes over board on her daughters birthday. 250 people for a 5 year old and
90% of them are adults. Taylor really lives in her own little world. What I have seen of
this little girl she is a very spoiled brat. No 5 year old would act or talk to me like she does
to Taylor and any other adult. I have read everything there is on Russell's so called
suicide and there still is questions in my mind. Just ask yourself if it is a suicide why was
his foot on the floor in what they called a hanging? Was it convenient that Taylor was
there when the body was found? I don't trust this woman and she has no idea what
reality and the real world is.

Taylor should have left the show when Russle died. I don't like her and never did even before because she's mean and a witch. She drove Russel to end his life eith her outllandish life style, knowing very well they didn't have the money. Her Birthday party was never for Kennedy but for herself so she could show off.

I only started watching the weekly drama 2 weeks ago, so am not all that up on all of them and their schenanigans. But love your character descriptions. At this time I think that the Kim woman is the worst of the bunch, but that evaluation may change as the nasties come out of the woodwork. Sounds like I'm in for a lot of fun care of the BH chicks. Good job. Thanks:)

Poor little Kennedy. Not only was she named after a dead President, but her vacuous mother has turned her into the freak child of the many Housewives series. What is Taylor's IQ? Didn't she learn anything from last year's birthday fiasco? It really is all about Mommy Dearest, with both husband and daughter left in the dust of her desperate search for attention. So sad.
    • ev's mom  •  6 months ago
I'm pretty sure I heard Taylor called Kennedy's party "my party" a couple of times. RHBH is so funny to watch b/c it's hard to believe women really act like that. Adrienne's my favorite. I don't care about the petty stuff. I think she trys her hardest to stay out of the bickering.

Alot of this is put on. I don't agree with spoiling any children this way but frankly see people on welfare buy their kids $100 gifts. EIther way I don't like it because it teaches the kids to love things, not people. Frankly, they are not much different than us. Just because they are rich why call them names? Seems to me their husbands work hard for what they have! Funny how President Obama has this same attitude by villinizing the rich but yet what has he done to make the world a better place? Besides did'nt he get lots of $$$ from Wall Street for his election? These woman at least participate in volunteer work. It is wrong to participate in class and race warfare because you can morally judge (supposide) poor as well as you can the rich.
