‘Saturday Night Live’: 10 First-Time Hosts We’d Like to See This Season

NBC's "Saturday Night Live" has already announced a couple of the guest hosts it plans to welcome in its upcoming 37th season, and the very first two represent extremes: Alec Baldwin will be hosting for the 16th time (more than any other performer) in the season's first episode; Melissa McCarthy, in the second will be making her "SNL" début. (When Jimmy Fallon appears for the Christmas episode, he'll fall somewhere in the middle: It will be his first time HOSTING the show, but of course, he was one of the "Not Ready for Primetime Players" from 2004 through 2010.)

As much fun as it is to see old faces return, McCarthy's casting led us to muse. Which other stars are both appealing to contemplate doing live comedy, and could plausibly be invited to guest-host "SNL"? We made a list!

Possible Host: Will Arnett
Plug-Ready Project: The freshman sitcom "Up All Night"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Rick Santorum.
Why He Might Get Called: "Up All Night" happens to air on NBC, which also airs "SNL"! Hello, synergy. Also, he could probably easily enlist Amy Poehler to return for a sketch or two, given that she is his wife.
Why He Might Not: I can only assume the reason he hasn't hosted to date is due to fears of nepotism during the Poehler's "SNL" tenure. Perhaps those fears still linger.

Here's Arnett in his recurring guest role as Devin Banks on "30 Rock":

Possible Host: Busy Philipps
Plug-Ready Project: Both the third season of "Cougar Town" and the upcoming feature film "I Don't Know How She Does It"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Kaley Cuoco of "The Big Bang Theory"
Why She Might Get Called: "Freaks & Geeks" alone has made her TV royalty.
Why She Might Not: Her sitcom's on another network, and "SNL" rarely highlights the stars of movies that are as man-repellent as "Does It" promises to be.

Possible Host: Charlie Day
Plug-Ready Project: The seventh season of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", plus the still-in-some-theaters feature "Horrible Bosses"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: His "Sunny" co-star Rob McElhenney
Why He Might Get Called: "Sunny" is one of FX's longest-running original series, and "SNL" cast member Jason Sudeikis co-starred with him in "Bosses."
Why He Might Not: Have we ever seen him get through an episode of "Sunny" without cursing?

Possible Host: Anna Kendrick
Plug-Ready Project: Both the cancer drama "50/50" and the fourth "Twilight" movie
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Her "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart
Why She Might Get Called: She's a young, attractive Oscar nominee.
Why She Might Not: Has she ever really done comedy? "Scott Pilgrim" doesn't count. (Well, fine, the "Twilight" series kind of does.)

Possible Host: Donald Glover
Plug-Ready Project: Both the third season of "Community" and the upcoming feature "The Muppets"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, anyone else he impersonated on his episode of "Comedy Central Presents"
Why He Might Get Called: Like Arnett, his show is on NBC; as Childish Gambino, he could also do double duty as musical guest.
Why He Might Not: Only if the NBC bookers are dopey enough to think he's as big a simpleton as his "Community" character, Troy Barnes.

Here's Troy, meeting his idol.

Possible Host: Octavia Spencer
Plug-Ready Project: The unstoppable box office juggernaut "The Help"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Oprah Winfrey
Why She Might Get Called: Aside from all the Oscar buzz for "The Help," there's her experience in ensemble comedies like "Halfway Home" and "Dinner for Schmucks."
Why She Might Not: Maybe Melissa McCarthy has already filled the "unconventional breakout film star" slot.

Possible Host: Timothy Olyphant
Plug-Ready Project: The upcoming third season of "Justified"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Jon Huntsman
Why He Might Get Called: He's proved his comedy chops with guest roles on "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl," so with his rugged good looks and Emmy-nominated basic-cable role, he could very well be the next Jon Hamm.
Why He Might Not: All the men at 30 Rock are too insecure to let him in the building.

Possible Host: Martha Plimpton
Plug-Ready Project: The second season of "Raising Hope"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Nancy Grace
Why She Might Get Called: She's a proud New Yorker who's finding a whole new audience with her Emmy-nominated role in "Hope," and has also logged thousands of hours working live in her many Tony-nominated stage roles.
Why She Might Not: Bookers might mistakenly think she's Amy Poehler.

Here's Plimpton in character as Virginia on "Hope."

Possible Host: H. Jon Benjamin
Plug-Ready Project: The third season of "Archer" and second season of "Bob's Burgers"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: Jon Favreau
Why He Might Get Called: His TV series — in addition to "Archer" and "Bob's," there's his Comedy Central sketch show, "Jon Benjamin Has a Van" — have made him a cult comedy star, not unlike recent "SNL" host Zach Galifianakis.
Why He Might Not: The roles he's best known are only vocal, and Galifianakis had headlined a record-breaking box-office hit when he was tapped.

Possible Host: Tilda Swinton
Plug-Ready Project: The upcoming feature "We Need to Talk about Kevin"
Could Easily Do an Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression of: David Bowie
Why She Might Get Called: She's an Oscar winner who's known for her fearlessness as an actor (and fashion icon); she could be just as fearless as a comic performer.
Why She Might Not: She's probably never heard of "Saturday Night Live."
