'Dancing With the Stars' Week 10: From Freestyle to the Finale, Who Made the Cut?

SPOILER ALERT: This recap reveals the elimination results of Week 10 of "Dancing With the Stars."

It was a freestyle free-for-all on Monday's penultimate episode of Dancing With the Stars, as the final four couples pulled out all the stops for a series of highly anticipated supersized dances. Season 18 finalists Amy Purdy and Derek Hough, Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas, and James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd performed the no-holds-barred freestyle routines (think extra dancers, special effects, and crazy choreography!), as well as an encore of a previously performed dance style picked by the judges.

But one of the longtime pro dancers came very close to missing all of the finale action. Mark Ballas was seriously injured during Sunday's camera blocking, with a rep telling Us Weekly that he was rushed to the hospital after his shoulder popped out while rehearsing a lift. As a precaution, another DWTS pro was brought in to learn his routine, but in the end, the notoriously devoted Ballas danced through the pain. (It's not the first time, either. In 2007, he danced in the finale with eliminated celeb Sabrina Bryan, despite a dislocated shoulder.)

"I wasn't going to let Candace down no matter what," Ballas said after the couple's first dance of the night. "You'd have to take my arm completely off for me not to be here, so I'm here for Candace one hundred percent."

Even with Ballas's bold return to the ballroom, it wasn't all fun and freestyles on Monday. The popular theme night also marked the final dance for one couple, and on the eve of the glitzy Season 18 finale, it was another shocker as James Maslow and pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd were eliminated from the competition.

"It's alright," the Big Time Rush star said to a clearly stunned audience. "I've really had an amazing experience on the show. I've enjoyed it more than I ever thought possible. I've made amazing friends and I'm just grateful for the opportunity."

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd, Tango and Freestyle

After sealing their first dance — a sexy tango — with a kiss, this hot couple dialed back the heat for a Hunger Games-style performance that included martial arts moves and sword spinning. "We have a new apocalyptic action hero!" Bruno Tonioli declared while Len Goodman praised the "concept, attitude, and energy" of the dance.

Meryl Davis and Maks Chmerkovskiy, Argentine Tango and Freestyle

The chemistry was undeniable during their perfect-scoring, "sumptuously seductive" Argentine tango (Tonioli's description), but Davis and Chmerkovskiy outdid themselves with their freestyle. They skipped the gags and gimmicks and went for a beautiful, unplugged dance that had Carrie Ann Inaba in tears. "First of all, I think you two should get married!" the emotional judge said. Inaba called the dance "the most stunning example of divinity in motion."

Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas, Quickstep and Freestyle

Ballas got the OK from his doctor to slip off his arm sling right before the live show, and his quickstep with Cameron Bure was a vast improvement over her previous performance of the dance. But the judges weren't quite as impressed with the duo's disco-themed freestyle. While the actress rocked a gold jumpsuit, her connection to the music was a bit rocky. Still, Tonioli called the "Full House" alum a "disco diva."

Amy Purdy and Derek Hough, Salsa and Freestyle

"This girl is on fire!" Tonioli cheered after Purdy and Hough's spicy salsa dance. (And yes, all three judges pulled out their "10" paddles.) The couple scaled way back for their freestyle, which culminated with Purdy spinning mid-air from a rope. Goodman didn't care for the rope, but Tonioli and Inaba both raved over the dance. "You were lyrical, ethereal, involved," Tonioli told the Paralympic snowboarder.
