Travis Fimmel stars in 'Vikings' (History)
Oh, Lorde! Forget about "Royals;" it's all about "Vikings" these days. The show, "Vikings," on History, that is.
In our exclusive sneak peek of Season 2 of the network's popular series, something tells us your head will be spinning even as your toes tap to the aforementioned Grammy-nominated artist's "Glory and Gore." Yeah, this 30-second, symbolism-filled teaser is that good.
At first glance, this is just a simple clip looking at the show's main character, Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel. But who are we kidding? There's so much more to it than that, kind of like the complicated – and totally badass – Ragnar himself.
For starters, there's that fire behind his eyes … literally. OK, so this one doesn't really require all that much explanation when you're talking about a ruler and raider who killed his way to the top.
Next comes the appearance of his mind falling apart, spliced with a raven's wing, a reminder of Ragnar's visions of Odin. The following wound in his side – that one has literal and metaphoric translations. We've seen the Season 2 premiere and can tease that the battle brewing between Ragnar and his brother, Rollo, hasn't gone away, and will have both physical and emotional consequences. After all, Ragnar may be ambitious and brutal, but he's a family man at his core.
Lastly, we see plant roots form around Ragnar's arm and evolve into his deadly spear. This is "Vikings," people. There. Will. Be. Blood.
It's worth reading into Lorde's lyrics a bit as well: "There's a humming in the restless summer air / And we're slipping off the course that we prepared…" Uh oh. "But in all chaos, there is calculation / Dropping glasses just to hear them break." That sounds about right. "You can try and take us / But we're the gladiators." Well, Vikings, actually, but let's not haggle over details. "You can try and take us / But victory's contagious." Bring it.
A few more teases you didn't see in this clip: That little dalliance Ragnar had with princess Aslaug has some pretty major consequences … even more than were revealed in the Season 1 finale. And we have to confess we're pretty excited to see the perfectly-cast Alexander Ludwig ("The Hunger Games") step into an older Bjorn's shoes when the series makes a time jump mid-season.
"Vikings" Season 2 premieres on History in February 2014. In the meantime, you can also check out this bloody little montage from Season 1.
