"American Horror Story: Coven" isn't even done yet, but fans are already clamoring for hints about the next installment in FX's horror anthology. And co-creator Ryan Murphy is happy to oblige.
He told Entertainment Weekly that Season 4 of "AHS" will take place in 1950, making it another period piece in the mold of Season 2's "Asylum." And his leading lady is preparing for another award-worthy transformation, he says: "Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent."
As for the season's overall theme, "if you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues," he teases. That puts us squarely in post-WWII America, with the Cold War heating up and anti-communist paranoia at its peak. That year, Joseph McCarthy began his Senate hearings aimed at outing covert communists in our midst, and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were indicted for passing nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union.
So "American Horror Story: Red Scare"? And how does that tie into Lange's German accent?
EW commenter John has an intriguing theory: "I'm going to go and say that next season will take place on a set of a 1950s horror movie. Remember Myrtle was playing that instrument when talking to Cordelia and Myrtle said it was used in horror movies in the 1950s?" Nice catch; we already know how Murphy likes to drop hints about future seasons in the current one.
Here are some more theories being floated by fans on Twitter:
That last tweet refers to Hildegard Knef, the famed German actress who escaped from a Soviet POW camp during World War II and went on to become a star on Broadway. We don't think "AHS" would borrow so directly from real life (Lange's previous characters have all been fictional) — but it sounds like one heck of a role, no?
Murphy may be dropping more hints during "Coven's" Jan. 29 season finale. As he told critics back in October, "I think the last image of the season will be, 'This is what you're getting next year,' and we'll announce the title and all that fun stuff." So save some of that speculation for two weeks from now, when the real fun begins...
