CHARMED! - The End Of An Era
December 25, 2006
A story of three sisters who've had to overcome their differences to become the power of three. The show whilst dealing with witches, demons, fairies, warlocks and other mysterious mythological creatures; deals with real life issues. It's very difficult to find a very successful show that not only has the elements of magic and kick ass chicks, but also deals with three sisters having to deal with everyday normal issues. Whilst the magical side of it, is the reason many are drawn to the show, it's the realistic fights between the sisters, the obstacles of love and troubles with men, babies and life in general that draw the 'other' crowd. Whilst "Charmed" is considered fantasy ... the obstacles they overcome and sometimes the methods demon's use to destroy the sisters are based on real life issues. The girls sometimes wanting to fulfill their own desires away from their "charmed destiny's" is one example. Whilst "Charmed" did hit a major obstacle after losing one of its main characters Prue Halliwell (played by Shannen Doherty); it took a while for the show to recover. However, whilst many objected to Paige (played by Rose McGowan); it wasn't Rose that people were objecting to. It was the fact that she was seen as the girl replacing Shannen. It was seen as Paige replacing Prue. This is where the magic kicks in; because fans of the show loved Prue, seeing her die was something they dreaded. Creaters of the show knew that this would be one major obstacle to overcome and they tackled it well. They put the feelings of the fans into the show ... they put those feelings into Piper (played by Holly Marie Combs). Piper was not ready for a new sister, she wasn't ready for anything at all ... after Prue's death and learning about Paige simultaneously ... she too felt betrayed and felt as though Paige was coming in to replace her big sister. Combs' acting has been strong, incredible and down right accurate. I've never seen an actor with such powerful emotion coming off the screen and into my living room. Her acting was so real and many of us empathised with Piper ... although Piper's reactions or should I say 'dismissals' of Paige is what led us to begin to feel sorry for Paige. To realise it wasn't her fault, that she too had gone through a difficult period and that she too lost her older sister in Prue. I believe this is what led fans to finally accept Paige and in turn Rose McGowan. Since then, Charmed grew strong once again and people finally grew to love the new power of three. It was also good to see that although the creators of the show could not bring Shannen back to the show on special occasions, even as a ghost ... they let her memory live on in many episodes to follow. For example, the end of season 6 when it was Prue's power of astral projection that helped the girls defeat Zankou.
Sadly enough, Charmed comes to an end with Season 8, and what an end to a magnificant era in magical television. Whilst we understand that Alyssa, Holly and Rose have spent a large chunk of their 20s playing these hot kick ass witches and along the way becoming the longest female leads in television history; we will miss them. The introduction of Billie to the show is good, it gives the show a new twist, not that the creators have ever run out of ideas. Charmed is definitely the greatest television series to have ever aired. However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. There is a petition to get The Charmed Sons on air, a spin off which would surround the lives of Wyatt and Chris .... Piper's sons. For those of you who wish to see the Charmed heir take hold and let the Charmed legacy continue, you should visit and make your statement. Unfortunately, I cannot post URL's for the site due to the rules of writing a review here. However, look up 'thecharmedsons' and you will find that you have the power to continue the Charmed legacy.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan for coming into our lives ... being our sisters and giving us the greatest gift any fan could ask for .... 8 years of magic, life and journey we'll never forget ... even long after these 8 years have passed ... Charmed will live on in our hearts forever. THANK YOU!
