Aaron (Richard T. Jones), the man Joan flirted with in New Orleans, comes home to California and starts dating her, and Joan is so amazed at how well things are going that she anticipates something going wrong.

When Lynn accuses her friends of being old, Joan, Maya and William join her at a club to prove her wrong, and Lynn runs into Xander (Quddus Philippe), her old lover, who is still upset with her for not performing at his rally.

William is unhappy at work and considers leaving the firm, but Monica worries that he won t be able to provide for her and their new baby. Meanwhile, Maya is asked to write a column in her neighborhood s newsletter.

Joan joins a support group for the relatives of those in Iraq and learns they can t have a holiday party because of finances, so she decides to hold a fund-raiser. Meanwhile, William imposes his holiday traditions on Monica.

Maya and Darnell attend a group for adoptive parents and are offered a child, and the reality of the situation forces them to face their romanticized view of adoption.
