Hilton Lucas, a hard-working, devoted husband and father tries to make sense out of our ever-changing society. His world revolves around his loving and patient wife Ruth; former neighbor and now permanent tenant Griffin; daughter Erica; Ruth's quirky friend and business partner Pauline; and neighborhood child Jurnee, who Hilton watches after school. In the fourth season, Erica quits cooking school to become a teacher.
