Catherine's testimony fails to convict a suspected killer. Catherine is upset about losing as well as the fact that she used to date the defense lawyer. On the evening before Grissom leaves on sabbatical, Catherine goes out of town to try to find evidence to put the killer behind bars.
As Catherine takes charge in Grissom's absence the team tracks a serial killer who has been killing young women since the 70s. Michael Keppler joins the team, but Catherine isn't sure about the temporary replacement for Grissom.

Keppler tries to keep his past a secret from his new team mates, but this leads to him concealing the fact that he knows the suspect in the double murder case they are investigating. Grissom returns from his sabbatical.
The team is surprised to learn that the miniature killer is back when Grissom receives a miniature showing that a woman and her cat are scheduled to die the next day. Grissom is upset that their search for the killer was delayed by the fact that he was on sabbatical when the package arrived, he is also puzzled when the killer doesn't leave his trademark at the crime scene.
Two young high school students disappear. The team originally thinks they may have run off together, but when they find blood, they must look into foul play.
When the team goes to process a house with several murdered showgirls, Sara gets to a victim before she dies and is haunted by the last words of the victim. The team finds the killer when he attempts to commit suicide. Sara rides in the ambulance with him and at the hospital she sees a birthmark and realizes that's what the victim was trying to tell her about.
Greg must deal with the mother and brother of the hoodlum he killed months ago when the team learns that he was involved in the murder of a young girl. Greg steps up and helps the boy to get a lighter sentence. Hodges works in the field.
Grissom sends the team out with new cases and goes to spend the evening in autopsy. While he's gone, Hodges takes over his office and assembles a team leading them to believe that Grissom wants them to work on the miniature killer case. Hodges makes a connection that helps Grissom; all the cases involved bleach.
In their attempt to identify the murderer of a has-been boxer who lived among a group of prostitutes who detested him, the team must establish which one of several life-threatening acts enacted against him that night actually killed him.

Before they can locate her, Sara disappears and Grissom finds a miniature of her death. Grissom tells the team about his relationship with Sara and they catch the killer, but she won't give up the location of Sara.
