About Last Night

Updated 2008-11-24 09:10:27

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I for one am very thankful that we get to spend this wholesome holiday together analyzing everyone's favorite mass murderer. Previously: Miguel and Dexter killed a bad guy together. Deb's research leads her to believe that The Skinner is monitoring his victims while trimming trees. Dexter refused to kill Ellen Wolf, causing Miguel's temper to flair. Anton is missing and Deb believes that The Skinner has him.

Dexter is waking up and VO'ing through his morning routine. He kisses Rita, makes lunch for the kids, showers and dresses, and puts on his pretense. Is that the new David Beckham cologne? He continues, VO'ing that there was no pretense between him and Miguel last night, when they killed Billy Fleeter. He's psyched. Someone knows his "truth." He's not alone. At least, it seems like he's happy about that.

There's a knock at the door -- it's Syl, and she doesn't look happy. She says that she needs to see Dexter's face as she asks him a question -- was he with Miguel last night? Dexter confirms that they were indeed together -- they were out late and Dexter didn't get home until midnight. That's funny, because it's real light outside and Miguel just got home AN HOUR ago. Rita comforts Syl as she starts crying and saying that Miguel is having an affair. Rita tells her that she can't be sure of that -- which is nice of her, I guess. Except Rita has had experience with shitty partners and lying about our whereabouts is definitely a bad sign and you'd think she'd want to spare someone the same pain that she has gone through. But, we know that Rita likes to work through stuff, so this probably makes sense. Syl says that, when you have been married as long as she and Miguel have been, you know when the other is lying. Dex VO's that that's something to look forward to. Um, I think you're safe with Rita. In fact, she asks Dexter if he knows where Miguel went. He doesn't -- which makes Syl feel worse. He tries to make the situation feel better by clumsily adding that he knows that Miguel had a case that he needed to work on, at the office. No one believes him. Syl says that this isn't their problem and she gets up to go, but Rita stops her. She says that Syl will stay there as long as she needs to be there. Dexter says that he's going to leave for work and he does.

Outside, Dexter's face gets really steely and he VO's that he will be making a detour before work. He arrives at Miguel's house, just as Miguel is leaving. He's dressed for work and whistling "Camptown Races." He sees Dexter and is all smiles. He hugs Dex and asks him if he's OK. He is. Miguel says that there was an imbalance in the world and they fixed it, with their own hands. He adds that he feels "real," maybe for the first time in his life. Well, if he wants to continue their "extracurricular activities" (he does), Miguel will need to work on his alibi. He tells him that Syl dropped by their house wondering where he'd been. Miguel is immediately contrite and says that he's a moron -- he needed to unwind after the killing and went to Jack's Hideaway, a bar. The next think he knew, the sun was coming up. He says that he will take care of Syl -- now he's got to get to work for a motion hearing that he doesn't want to miss. Before he drives away, he tells Dexter that he will get better at this with Dexter's help. Then, he's gone. Dexter VO's that he nabbed a wife-killer at Jack's Hideaway last year, right at closing time, which was 2 AM. Syl said that Miguel got home just an hour ago, so now he's wondering if Miguel just lied to him.

Dexter gets a phone call on his cell. It's another detour. This time it's Anton's apartment. Dexter is in his latex gloves and looking around. He stops to tell Deb that there's no blood anywhere. "Anton didn't just follow The Skinner out of here," she reasons. He'll keep looking. Deb tells a cop that they need to recanvas the area and she responds that they have already questioned everyone in the building. Deb says they should talk to the kids who were asleep when they were canvassing earlier. Angel enters and asks what Deb has got. She says that The Skinner has Anton and Angel responds that the trimmed trees outside don't tell them for sure that he has Anton. Quinn says that the coffee pot was left burning -- Anton definitely left in a hurry. Angel wants to know why Anton was back in town and Deb says that he never left. She says that, if he'd been contacted, he would never have agreed to surveillance. Angel doesn't care if he would have agreed to anything -- that's why he's a CI and that's why they used him as bait in the first place.

Dexter interrupts to tell them there is no lining in Anton's trash bin. They all head to the building trash dumpster. Dexter finds a renewal form for Rolling Stone addressed to Anton Briggs. The physical evidence tells us that Anton threw the bag -- probably in a defensive move. Deb questions why he wouldn't use his fists. Well, aside from the fact that trash bag fighting is one of the oldest forms of self-defense, Dexter suggests that he was hurt. There is a sample of blood and hair on the wall near the dumpster. Angel deduces that Anton was attacked from behind when he took out the trash, which made him hit his head on the wall. He threw the trash as a last ditch effort. Quinn adds that Anton was probably thrown into a car and the car peeled out -- this he gathered from fresh tire marks on the pavement. Deb seems freaked as Angel calls in Anton as a missing person. Deb says to Dex that The Skinner has had Anton for 24 hours, what does he think that means for his chances? Dexter says that the Medical Examiner's report indicates that The Skinner works slowly, most likely to build fear. Then, he adds that Anton is a big guy with lots of skin. Maybe he should consider a second job as grief counselor. Deb just kind of stares at him and he tells her that he said that to be comforting.

Deb says that they need to bring George King in for further questioning. Quinn says they've been looking for him all night. Angel asks if they've gotten any information from King's foreman, Mario, who is still being held for questioning. Nope. He freaked out when they brought up King and would rather be deported to Nicaragua than talk. Angel says that he will try to find a flexible judge -- presumably to let them keep Mario longer, though they don't have any concrete reason. Deb says that she's going to monitor King's house and Quinn corrects her -- they will be monitoring King's house. Before they leave, Angel stops them and tells them that he wants them to use restraint and to wait for a warrant before any search. Heh. Of all the times he could ask for that, he has to do it at the exact moment when you know girl's not going to be using any restraint. Angel says that they need to find some sort of evidence or, even if they find King, they won't be able to hold him past today. Dexter replies, "A day can save a lot of skin." Angel seems appropriately freaked out by that comment.

Meanwhile, poor Anton is strapped to a chair and is missing large swaths of skin from his back. He is hyperventilating and telling someone that they have to listen to him. And, who is that someone? Why, it's George Washington King! He's wiping off a big giant knife and walking menacingly towards Anton. Anton says that if he knew where Freebo was, he would tell him. The cops were using him as bait. This seems ineffective so Anton tries a new tactic -- he does know where Freebo is! He can show him! Still not working, let's try...you want money? Freebo owes you money? Anton can get you some money! King leans down and tells him that he doesn't want Anton's money -- he loaned Freebo that money and this is about respect. Uh, so if he loaned that money to Freebo, he must have met him, right? Does this guy really think that someone like Anton would feel scared of that douchebag or otherwise obligated to protect him? George Washington King needs to wise up, or else he's just going to be skinning people for nothing all of the time. Wasted energy there. King tells Anton that, after the first cut, he had all night to think about his questions. After this most recent cut, he'll only have an hour. No rest for the cutted. As he leaves, Anton cries like a baby, which is sad.

At the station, Dexter arrives to find Maria trying to reach Ellen on the phone. She says that she was surprised that Ellen missed the motion hearing this morning -- Chicky Hines was surprised as well. Hmm. Dexter looks concerned. Maria asks her to call her and let her know that she's alright.

It's Harry vision time. Harry points out that Miguel was missing last night and now Ellen's missing, which could be a coincidence... Dexter seems really disturbed and walks out of his office.

At King's house, Quinn tells Deb that policemen have been on patrol all night and there's no sign of him. Deb says that something in his house must give clues about where he is and Quinn replies that the warrant will be there soon. It sounds like Deb doesn't want to be restrained. She goes around his house to his backyard and sees a locked work shed. She freaks out and starts calling for Anton and banging on the door of the shed. Quinn says that he doesn't hear anything. Deb, full of adrenaline and terror, says that she does hear something and that means probable cause to search. He reminds her that the warrant is on its way and she responds, "Right. Restraint." Simultaneously, she grabs some hedge clippers and breaks open the lock on the door. Quinn is not happy. Anton's not in the shed. Quinn reminds her that she's not the only person working this case.

Dexter calls Miguel, who is in his car. He asks him how the motion hearing went, which Miguel says was continued. It's good news for him. He says that Dexter doesn't have to keep checking on him, but why don't they meet for lunch. He's thought of some more projects. Dexter VO's that he's unsure about killing again so soon. Dexter says that he has too much work to do and Miguel says that he heard that The Skinner grabbed another person. Before he hangs up, Miguel says that he should let him know if he can help.

A call center has been set up in the station to accept tips regarding Anton's and King's whereabouts. Barbara is one of the people taking calls. Maria tells Angel that Anton's picture was given to the media an hour ago (it looks effective too, lots of calls are coming in. It's Jerry Lewis up in there). Angel says he is going to question Mario again, but Maria says he's already in an interview room. She's actually going to work on him a little bit. She tells him that she's tired of standing behind the glass wall of her office and wants to help.

Vince is talking to Barbara about her work in Vice. He's interested in pre-op transsexuals. He's heard, and he's asking her for confirmation, that their "junk still works, but nothing comes out." All class, that Masuka. He says that he's heard it's called "slug fucking." Seriously. She confirms that what he has heard is true. Angel has caught this conversation and is none too happy. He approaches them and Barbara gives him a kiss as she tells him that she'd heard their department needed extra bodies. She gets another call and Angel calls Vince away from her. He asks what he's doing and Vince says that he's helping out -- this is a way for him to meet "chicks" from other departments. Angel tells him that Barbara is his chick and he doesn't want Vince talking his filth at her. He says that Barbara is the person who brought up the topic, which Angel doesn't seem to want to believe. Vince says that Barbara is like the "Wikipedia of Perv." He says that he needs to get a girlfriend from Vice, because Barbara is awesome. Vince walks back to Barbara leaving Angel confused -- which is funny. If he has a problem with her being a perv master, I don't know. He'll look like a fool.

Deb is freaked out that they can't find any evidence, when suddenly King drives up. Quinn tells Deb that they need his cooperation and she's still not wanting to be restrained. King asks calmly what they are doing at his house. Quinn shows their warrant to search his home. He asks what they're looking for and Deb says it's more like "who." She asks him where he's been all evening and he says that he works nights. Quinn asks if he would like to come to the station to answer questions and he (with maddening calm) says that he will be happy to answer any questions right there. Deb's still playing bad cop and asks him if he's got somewhere he needs to be -- he reminds her that the trees keep growing. She tells him that they'll wait, so he asks Quinn if he's under arrest. Quinn replies that he's not, but they can hold him for questioning. "For the day," replies King -- still so calm. Deb asks him if he's some sort of lawyer or something, "no wait, I forgot, you're a fucking tree trimmer." You catch more flies with honey, Deb. Seriously though, rein it in. He replies that he moved to this country for basic liberties and he knows his rights. Great. Quinn leads him to a police car.

At the station, Maria is questioning Mario. She's telling him that George King is hanging him out to dry. Dexter is watching the video from another room and VO's that there is real fear in Mario's eyes. On another screen, Dexter watches Quinn and Deb questioning King. Quinn guesses that King would be the right age to have been in the Contras vs. Sandinistas conflict in his homeland. King responds that he learned respect in the military. Deb wonders if he learned any torture techniques, say, rendition? She's really not making this easy for anyone. He says "No Ma'am" he doesn't know anything about torture. Deb recognizes that they did teach him respect in the military -- did he show any respect to Wendell when he tore his skin off? Or Anton when he bashed him over the head? Yeah, this is not working. Quinn suggests that she get some coffee. Luckily, she listens.

Outside the questioning room, Deb joins Dexter, who is still watching the interviews on video. She says that King looks harmless and Dex says, "They usually do." Dexter says that Deb should follow her intuition -- he believes via one of his "creepy" hunches that King has held life and death in his hands and enjoys it. She wonders how to get info out of him and Dex says that (just a hunch) he's heard that guys like King have a, how do you say, CODE? It seems that King is offended by disrespect, so maybe she should approach him with deference. She mulls over that for a second and I can't tell if she's like, "Yeah!" or "Hell no." He tells her to think about it and leaves her when he sees Maria.

Once he has caught up with Maria, he tells her that he heard her talking about Ellen being possibly sick. He read something about a stomach flu going around and blah, blah, lie, just need to find out about Ellen. She says that she still hasn't heard from Ellen, and she's a little worried. Dex VO's that he's worried too.

He arrives at Ellen's home office and VO's that, if she were sick, this is where she would be. He finds her car still in her driveway. He says she could have gone for a long walk, borrowed a friend's car, or maybe she's in a coma in a hospital after an accident. He gets into her home and VO's that there are no signs of foul play, however, Harry taught him to be suspicious. He sprays something on the floor and then flashes a light over it. Traces of blood everywhere. He says out loud, to himself, that Miguel wouldn't do this. They had agreed that Ellen Wolf was innocent. Meanwhile, Harry is holding the hand of dead Ellen and waving "hello." Dexter resists. It was just blood and Miguel wouldn't even know how to dispose of a body -- unless...he buries it in an open grave . Harry uses Ellen's dead hand to make a thumbs-up sign. You know, as the season has progressed, it looks like Dexter is starting to agree with dead Harry a little more. Granted, it's all in his head, but still. It's nice to see the father and son coming back together.

Rita is preparing for an open house when someone comes in. It's Miguel and he has flowers. Rita tells him that Syl wasn't up for working today, so she's staging the open house for her. Miguel tells her she's a good friend, then he tells her that she should have the flowers. Nice effort there, Prado. Rita thinks about it then tells him she will make sure Syl gets the flowers. He turns to leave and Rita stops him. She is so bold as to tell him (nicely) that he's an idiot for taking Syl for granted. She's still the beautiful exciting woman that he married, and he'd better recognize. He says that he's not having an affair and she replies that it may true, but he violated her trust. He says that his world is falling apart a little bit with Oscar, Ramon, and his cases. Rita reminds him that the same things are falling apart for Syl -- she is his partner. He says, "You're a wise person, aren't you?" She says that she's learned from her many mistakes -- Miguel calls it insight. He pulls out two chairs and says that he will follow her lead -- she should point the way.

Deb enters the interview room occupied by King. With great tenderness, she says that she knows that respect is very important to him. He concedes that it is. She also says that she knows that he feels that people need to earn his respect. "Yes Ma'am." Then, Deb loses her shit. She says, "Well, I feel like you've earned this." She knocks him out of his chair and pins him on the floor. Carpenter has got some serious physical presence. I have no problem at all believing that she could take this guy. He's frightened. She says, "What's the matter, little gardener, huh? Do you feel disrespected? You'll get used to it in prison, because your foreman Mario is next door and he is spilling his guts!" I don't think this is what Dexter had in mind, but it is awesome. King is suddenly no longer engaged with what Deb is saying. She says that she can see he is positive that Mario is afraid of him as she pulls his head to her like he's a rag doll. This actor playing King is pretty exceptional too. He can be a little hammy, but this is good. "What did you do to him?" she screams. "What did you do to Anton?" I'm serious, people. Show me some more exciting supporting work from an actress this year. This shit is good and she should get an award. Not that that's the most important thing, but I want it to happen. Quinn bursts in the room and screams for her to get off of King. She says her requisite "Fuck" and leaves the room.

We see a highway and continue to hear highway noises as Anton screams for help from some sort of dark shed. Poor guy looks like he's in tons of pain. Outside the station, Quinn follows a stomping Deb. He tells her that they're supposed to be working together, which is difficult with her going off half-cocked. How is he supposed to trust her? She thinks that's an unbelievable question, but I have to say that, right now, the things that she has heard about Quinn are not quite as damning as the things that he's actually witnessed with her in regards to this case. He says that she's lucky Angel wasn't watching the monitors. She says that she's thinking about Anton and he replies that he wants to find him just as badly as she does. She shoots back that if he cared anything about Anton, he wouldn't have made him his "fake CI." He says that she was too busy boning him to provide him with protective surveillance. Wow, this is getting thick. She says that he's crossing a line -- which is kind of funny since she keeps bringing up that he like killed a cop or something. That's a line too, right? He says that she knew Anton was in town and she says that she "told him to call it in." Eh, not sure I know exactly what she means. Call in a disturbance? Or just call in for surveillance. Anyhoo, he says that Deb should have called it in. At this point, she kind of cracks a little bit and says that he's right. It's her fault. He softens too and says that he used Anton -- it's his fault too. Deb says that they only have a few more hours that they can hold onto King -- Quinn suggests that they get back to work.

Here's Dexter at the cemetery in coveralls with a shovel. He VO's that there are four scheduled burials today (in all of Miami? Healthy town), so there are four places for him to check. Ellen's not in the first one. He VO's that, you know, that blood might not even belong to Ellen. It could be a client's blood or a previous owner's. No luck. She's in the second grave. Dexter is stunned. He VO's that he taught him how to do this -- he created this. He apologizes to Ellen and covers her face with soil and exits the grave. Harry is whistling "Camptown Races" and shoveling a grave. He tells Dex that Miguel is making his own choices. Dex says that Ellen didn't deserve this and that Harry can say it ("I told you so."). It doesn't matter now, says Harry. Because there will be plenty more where Ellen came from, then we see that behind Harry there are many open graves. "No there won't," replies Dexter as he grabs his shovel and starts moving briskly. He calls Miguel and asks him if he can still do lunch.

He can. They're dining on the water and Miguel asks Dexter what he thinks of King as The Skinner expert. He says that he has to go to the station later to decide whether they are filing charges against King or not. He asks Dexter if he thinks that King is the guy. "He's the guy." Miguel says that if the law doesn't get King, he and Dexter can. In fact, he could have King back out on the street in a matter of hours. In a profile close-up, Dexter asks him if he will need help with this one or if it will be another "solo project." The camera pans quickly to Miguel, who doesn't say anything. Dexter reminds him that they agreed to leave Ellen alone. Miguel says that technically they agreed not to kill her together and they didn't. Wow. "Technically" Miguel agrees that's bullshit. He didn't tell Dexter because he knew he wouldn't approve. Dexter says that Ellen wasn't guilty and Miguel says that they have different definitions of "guilty." Dexter insists that Miguel got rid of her because she was in his way. What about serving justice? Miguel asks if that's really Dexter's concern. He says that he doesn't need to lie to him and Dexter says that's what he thought. He says that he should have told Dexter -- he abused his trust, which wasn't easy to earn. Dexter is immovable right now. Miguel reminds him that he gave Dexter the shirt that links him to Freebo's death. He wishes he had another way to show Dexter how important this partnership is to him. Dex says that he would take a little remorse, but Miguel says that he doesn't feel any. He will once he gets caught -- oh no, Miguel says he didn't leave any evidence. People will just think one of her scumbag clients got her. "Right. Just another lowlife who beat and stabbed an innocent woman." Bullseye. Miguel stabs his lunch and points his finger at Dexter. He sternly says that they have different definitions of guilty. He says that this is the nature of friendship -- when they disagree, they'll go their own ways. Dexter says that there will be no more individual projects and Miguel says that he's a big boy. Wow, this guy got out of control quickly, huh? Miguel says that Dexter will eventually trust that he knows what he's doing, then he leaves. Dexter VO's that Miguel thinks he's untouchable, but it's time that he learned that he's not. This is gonna be good. We see Dexter, back in coveralls, go back to the cemetery.

At the station, Deb is watching a monitor that isn't even on when Maria enters the room. Deb says to Maria that King is a ghost. No security cameras implicate King at all. Maria says that means they'll need to get it out of King -- she asks if she's going to let Quinn get the confession alone. Deb replies that her time is best spent away from other people. Maria says that a good friend of hers told her that she put a wall up around her. She thought she did it to make herself a better cop, but it didn't make her better. Hmm, that's the most human she's ever been with Deb.

Back at the cemetery, some kids are playing around. We see them stop and stare into an open grave -- I think we know what they see. At the station, Dexter VO's that people think of Miguel as justice. He thinks of him as a guy who is about to learn a hard lesson.

Angel says that the tire tracks near Anton's dumpster match the tires on King's truck, but Miguel says there are thousands of trucks like that in the area. Angel adds that trimmed trees were at every crime scene -- Miguel points out that the trees at his house just got trimmed. They point out that Mario is petrified of King and Miguel says it's a guy who is afraid of his boss. Not unusual. Finally, Deb says, "He's the fucking guy!" Classy. Angel clears his throat to let her know not to go further. Everybody stares at her, so she adds, "Sir."

Maria takes Miguel into another room. She tells us that they need his help and she reminds him that he owes them for helping Ramon. They need to keep George King there. Miguel says that he can charge him for assaulting a palm tree. Um, yeah, so we're trying to find this guy who is getting skinned right now, OK, Miguel? She says that he has his ways of being able to get people "lost in the system" and he doesn't seem too happy to have that distinction. He says that he will do everything in his power for Maria.

Dexter is watching Angel take a phone call from his office. When he hangs up, he waves for Dex, who says under his breath, "Showtime." Hey, that's the network! And, don't ever forget it. There's another body. They're going to check it out. Angel tells Quinn and Deb to stay with King. Deb asks if the body is Anton and he says that it's a female at the cemetery. Miguel hears this and it looks like every muscle in his body tenses.

At the cemetery, Ellen Wolf is in rough shape. Angel asks what the cause of death was and Vince says that it could have been from the severe beating, strangulation, and multiple stab wounds that she received. Ouch. "Whoever did this was not a fan," says Angel. Vince says he thinks the killer is a pro, because the body dump was very clean. Dex VO's that his lesson plan does not include Miguel getting caught.

Maria runs up and Angel holds her. She's emotional and doesn't want to believe that it's Ellen. When she sees the body, she's stunned. Angel takes her for a walk. Dexter says, aloud, that too many people are affected when the innocent die. He VO's that that is the lesson he wants Miguel to learn. Here's Miguel now. Dexter VO's that no one is untouchable (and he learned that the hard way). Now, it's Miguel's turn to learn. He sees Dexter and approaches him. He says that the police won't find any evidence and Dexter says that he knows. So, Dexter was just making a point? Follow the code or else? Dex responds that there are a lot of other subtleties, but if that's what he gleaned from the lesson, fine. He says to Dex, "You're a wise person, aren't you?" OK, I'm having a flashback moment here. Dexter thinks he's being facetious, but he says that Dexter has insight. I think my DVR is broken. I could swear I've already seen this part. It's trippy. He says he would be a fool not to follow Dexter's lead. Wait, this guy is just a total bullshitter. The TV is fine, thank God. He says, "I think you're gonna save my life," to Dexter, who wonders via VO if this is for real. Miguel leaves Dexter so that he can make a statement to the press. He wouldn't want anyone to get any ideas about killing lawyers. Miguel's face seems super cold right now, but I don't think that Dexter sees that. He just VO's, "Lesson learned, it seems."

That night, Dexter comes home to Rita. If you thought we were going to get out of this episode without any wedding talk...WRONG. Rita has cake there -- she wants him to taste his favorite. He tries two types and she asks his favorite -- he responds that he's more in the mood for steak. He should know by now how she's feeling about the steak talk. He's asking for trouble. She reminds him that they're getting married and need to choose a cake for this damn wedding that we'll have to hear about forever. Dexter is distracted. He asks if Syl is still there and she says that she isn't, because she intervened. She says that Miguel thinks she's a very wise person. Uh oh. She adds that she just gave him some insight (Dexter is picking up on this) and he said he thinks she could save his life. Dexter's mind is spinning -- he knows that Miguel is a liar, but now he's wondering when the lying began. Rita asks him again which cake he liked -- but he's thinking about the shirt that Miguel gave him. He stands and says that he has to look at some blood. But, hazelnut. That's the cake he likes.

At the station, Maria and Angel are returning from Ellen's crime scene. He tells her to get home and get some rest. She is still visibly shaken, but she's not going home. She says that she has to do something. Angel sees Quinn and Deb and asks, nay pleads for developments on The Skinner case. They don't have anything, but suddenly Miguel shows up and says that he wants to help. He asks if King has legal counsel -- he doesn't, because he knows they don't have anything on him. Well, he can't make any offers to King if the guy doesn't have counsel, and the tape of him talking to him could come back to haunt him. Angel says that - nudge -- the camera has been on the fritz - nudge -- and it wouldn't surprise him - nudge -- if it didn't pick up anything at all. Nudge. So, Miguel goes into the interview room. He walks to the camera and turns it off.

Dexter is at his apartment and digs up the Freebo shirt.

Miguel comes out of the interview room. That's it. King is free. Huh? I'm confused. Which is kind of exciting. Dexter enters the station as King is being led out. He VO's that he hopes they meet again, for he'd like to get to know him better. But, how much can you really know about a person, he thinks as he sees Miguel. Then, he goes into his office and tests the blood on the shirt.

Deb is wondering what else they can do. Quinn says that they've got Mario, but they would essentially have to skin him before he'd talk. Deb smiles like she's got an idea and Quinn clarifies -- they won't be skinning Mario. No, she's got a better idea. She says she needs her partner for this.

They drive Mario home. He gets out of the car to find that the trees in his yard have been trimmed. NOT THE TREES! He knows, for some reason, that they told King that Mario had been singing. She says she's sorry that she dragged his family into this and she'll do what she can to protect them. He says she won't be able to do anything, but she says she can't try unless he tells her where King is. He resists initially, but says that King has a building under the highway that he pays for in cash. She tells him to go inside and lock his doors and she'll call for a patrol car. She picks up Quinn in her car and they're on their way.

We see King walking along the highway, approaching a building. He's putting a key into the lock when a car starts speeding up. It's Deb and Quinn. King runs off, but Deb beats on the door. Quinn decides to "fuck restraint" and runs into the building with his car, knocking down the wall. They find Anton inside and he looks pretty bad. He says, "You found me." She says that he can't get away from her that easily. I, for one, and embarrassingly relieved that he's not dead.

So, Dex is checking this blood, and whistling "Camptown Races." I got a cool email from a reader, Robert, who tells me that this is derived from a movie called The Stepfather where the killer hums that tune before he kills anyone. I did not know that.

Miguel goes into Maria's office. He offers to take her home, but she says she can't go home. There's too much silence. He says that she doesn't want to go home and think about what Ellen went through, which makes her start crying. Thanks for the cheer-me-up, Miguel. He reminds her that Ellen's gone, but he still has other friends. He says that she's got him. She sobs on him as he has a really weird frozen look on his face.

And...the blood is not Freebo's. It's cow blood. Dexter VO's that he didn't create a monster, he was used by one. I hope that's a comfort. Dexter stands slowly and picks up a stool and throws it through the window of his office. Then, he proceeds to trash the HELL out of the place. This is hardcore. He even smashes a glass cabinet with his hands. Finally, he screams, "MIGUEL!!" It's a dream. I thought I was watching another show for a second -- the one where Dexter feels things and reacts. Miguel pops his head into Dexter's office and confirms that they will play 9 holes of golf the next day. Dexter becomes all smiles and says, "You bet." Then, he watches Miguel walk away. He VO's that tomorrow, maybe the next day, he'll let Miguel know how he feels. It's something he won't have to fake, because what he feels right now is real. I think he may be having his first authentically warm-blooded response to something.
