Turning Biminese

Updated 2008-10-27 09:20:56

Previously: Rita, of course, is pregnant. Ramon wouldn't let go of trying to find out where Freebo was, so Dexter set him up to look unpredictable. Miguel confessed to Dex that he was the only person he trusted. Deb got closer to Quinn's informant, Anton. Quinn told Vince that he was revolting. Angel tried to hook up with a hooker, but she was a cop leading a sting. She agreed not to tell on him. Dex proposed to Rita. She said yes.

Dexter is giving us his best Dr. Oz via VO. He tells us that there are many ways to stop a heart. Diet is one way. His favorite is a severed aorta. This feels like a perfect moment to watch a sonogram! This is the first time Dexter has started a heartbeat, he tells us. The doctor explains to Rita that she is 9 to 10 weeks pregnant. Dexter VO's that she's stronger than she looks, as she's clutching his hand. Apparently, Rita has a very good grip. Good for her. He says he can't ignore that he's going to be a father. Has he been ignoring it? Because I feel like that's ALL we ever talk about on this show. That damn baby. It feels very weird to find myself asking, "Aren't there going to be some more dead people in this episode? Dexter must really be getting antsy to kill someone. Hope he works that out." But I do. I ask those questions.

Dexter is on a golf course with Miguel. Miguel suddenly asks, "Front or back pocket?" They're playing pool? Dexter doesn't know what he means either. Oh, he's asking for the picture of the baby's sonogram. "This makes it real," says Miguel. An errant golf ball flies from out of nowhere and hits their golf cart. Probably someone tired of hearing about the baby. Miguel screams at them saying they could have killed someone. He apologizes to Dexter for losing his temper -- he has his mind on the office. He has been working on the case of South Beach guy who kills his wife on a cruise. His office has no jurisdiction because it happened in international waters. He knows that the guy did it -- he also got off for killing his first wife. She was rich and he used her money to buy an unstoppable legal team. They confused the jury and let him out to kill again. Dex VO's that he may use his form of justice. Funny that he brings up justice. I guess, because of Dexter's facility with forensics, he's comfortable making his own case against the people that he ends up killing. It just seems like his Dark Passenger, besides making him really happy when killing people, also lets him live free of doubt that he's ever killed someone that might not have fit the Code.

Later, at the clubhouse, Syl and Rita join Miguel and Dexter for lunch. They had been at the spa. Do they not have other friends? They hang around an awful lot. I guess it's that couples have to hang with couples thing. Miguel says massages and facials and whatnot are not for men. Dex agrees -- lying naked on a table is not for him. Sure, but you have a different context. Is he drinking a tequila sunrise? How festive. Syl has a great idea -- she will list Rita's house so they can buy a new place. Uh oh. Ambush. Dex says he has been thinking he might keep his place. Oh, wow. That's not going to go over well. I can't imagine a time that has ever worked for anyone. He says he'll sublet though. I still think that's not going to work. Rita says they will need a bigger home and Syl agrees. Rita looks really intense right now. You'd think someone as demure as her would have waited to have this conversation alone. Of course, how could she have known Dex would want to keep a pied-a-terre across town. Dex VO's that this is like Custer's last stand. Safety Deposit Box, Dexter. Remember those words. Syl and Rita go get crepes and Miguel apologizes for Syl's real estate aggression. Dex says that he didn't think he'd have to give up his place so quickly. Really? The Dark Passenger must not require sharing.

Later, Dex is walking along the path inside his apartment complex to his apartment. He names all of the things he loves about the place, not the least of which is the "no children allowed" sign. Are those times gone forever? Inside, he looks up Ethan Turner, Miguel's free killer. He needs to check that he meets the Code. Then, he imagines movers taking away his stuff. Harry is there and tells the movers to leave a lamp -- it's not Rita's style. Dexter says it's his style, but no matter. Marriage is 50/50 and I guess Dexter killing people takes up the entire 50 of Rita's compromise. Seems like she should at least get to pick out the lamps. Harry says that what's Dex's is Rita's. He pulls the slides from the A/C and says that Dex better hope she doesn't insist on central air. I repeat, Safety Deposit Box. Done with his fantasy time, Dexter prints out pictures of Ethan.

Anton and Deb are talking to each other on their cell phones. She says they've had a lot of secret meetings with "bumkis" to show for it. He corrects her. It's "bupkis," of Yiddish origin. Look who is the big linguistic brain on the phone! Deb, who thankfully doesn't live in Las Vegas or her skills in vice would have to be put to practical use, bets a million dollars that she's right. Then, we see that they're in cars next to each other. She tells him to split, before they get made. He says it's cute that she's trying to protect him, but now it's her turn to correct him. She's trying to protect the investigation. I don't mean to harp on it, but these two really are the most exciting part of the show for me right now.

They find Anton's source high and lying in an alley. "I love the smell of ass in the morning," says Deb. Mmm, evocative. She asks, "Anyone fucking in there?" to the catatonic guy and Anton says she must be good with kids. Heh. Anton tells the source that he has some heroin for him, which wakes him up. Then Anton asks him when the last time he saw Freebo was. He mumbles "Wendell" says he's not coming back. They have to talk to "Wendell" to get to Freebo.

We're at a new crime scene and it's the sheriffs office's jurisdiction. Vincent asks an officer to move so he can take a picture -- there's clearly tension. The victim is another skinned person. A girl. Great. How long are we going to see this skinning stuff without even the smallest development in regards to who it is doing it? Gimme some intrigue!! Angel says that the sheriffs are in charge of the case. Vince steps away, annoyed. Angel asks Quinn what's wrong with Vince -- he doesn't joke around, he dresses better, he's polite. I'd suspect a brain tumor, but Quinn says maybe someone pointed out the error of his ways.

Back at station, Maria says that it will be a joint investigation with their office and the sheriff's office. She will share case information as a professional courtesy. Angel and Quinn seem miffed, because someone else is benefiting from their police work. Maria assures them though that it's still their case. The sheriff's office is sending over lab work from the dead girl. Vince says he'll talk to the medical examiner. Deb responds with a grin, "another four hour erection?" Vince doesn't laugh and Deb looks really confused.

Deb says she is having Wendell Owens, Freebo's doorman, brought in to see if he knows why people who knew Freebo keep winding up dead. She wants to connect the dots. Dexter VO's -- "I may be one of those dots." Well, if you'd even ponder the existence of this skinner killer for a moment, maybe we could erase your dot. Angel says they'll need consent from a parent to interview Wendell, since he's 15 years old. Quinn says he'll make sure they do everything by the book. Deb looks rightfully annoyed. Is he trying to set her up for something? All of his bullshit is so presentational. It just feels like he's trying to make her look bad. When the meeting is over he compliments her police work. She replies, "Yeah right," and walks off.

Dex sees Wendell being lead in. He VO's that he doubts Wendell would remember that he met Dex the day his boss died, but why take a chance. Then he's all sneaking around corners and stuff -- very inconspicuous. Miguel calls him -- he's canceling their lunch because he has had a hard morning. The feds aren't pursuing the case of Ethan, the cruise killer. They say there is a lack of evidence, even though a witness placed both on deck right before she went missing. Ethan is going free again. Miguel says, "Did I mention he left his first wife's teenage daughters penniless?" Watch it dude, he's going to fucking kill the guy if you keep it up. Dex asks if they can meet later that day. Miguel has court. Tomorrow? Dex may be busy . He VO's that he has due diligence to complete.<.p> Deb and Wendell are sitting at her desk. It is a face off. He asks how long he will have to be there. Deb says when they speak to his mother, who they are having a really hard time finding. Deb asks if she has a job and Wendell says she does what she has to do. Hmm, maybe Deb knows her from vice days. She sees Quinn looking, so she decides to not be a hammer and gets close to Wendell and talks about her own mom and dad. She says it's hard for a single parent. "Yeah, I bet you had it real bad," he replies. She says that no, she didn't. She understood why her dad worked so hard, but after a while she stopped looking for him to show up at her softball games. "That doesn't mean he didn't love me, or that it didn't hurt." Wendell responds, "You played softball?" "First base." "But you don't look gay." Touche. And funny. They laugh -- she has made a breakthrough, which doesn't really matter yet since they are not allowed to talk to him yet. She tells him that she'll go get some food for him from the cart outside. As she's leaving, she asks Quinn ("Partner") if he could keep an eye on their guest.

She's waiting for the elevator when Dex shows up. He asks if she's getting anywhere with Wendell. She asks if he's set a date for the wedding or if he's moving in with Rita. She needs to know when she is going to break her lease and move into his place. "Why does everyone think I'm going to give up my place?" Because they don't kill people and you're getting married. Deb reasons that there is not enough room for Rita and kids at his place and he's the last guy who needs a fuck pad. Classy.

Ramon exits the elevator. He asks mildly where Maria is. After he walks away, Dex says they now know who the sheriffs department sent to look into their files. Deb says that Ramon is wound too tightly -- which, frankly, is a lot coming from her. Ramon says "They keep getting younger" when he enters Maria's office, in reference to Wendell. She explains that he worked for Freebo. He doesn't really respond, which is irritating because it's proof that Homicide is still following leads trying to solve Oscar's murder. Maria is surprised the sheriff's department sent him as liaison, seeing as he's bat shit crazy and all that. He says he's not there to make friends, he's doing his job. Well, if doing his job means definitely not making friends, he's off to a good start. She says she has known him his whole adult life, so cut the crap. She knows he's insinuating himself into Oscar's murder case. She says she could go over his head and have him removed, but she won't. However, if the cases aren't connected, she will stop cooperating.

Dex is shopping for golf clubs. We see Ethan. Dex VO's that after the 1st woman's money ran out, he wasted no time getting a new wife and killing her. Dex strikes up conversation and finds out that Ethan is going on Caribbean cruise. He's remarkably open with strangers for a killer. I'd imagine secrecy would be a key to getting away with stuff, but what do I know -- I've never killed anyone. I swear. Ethan says you can cut corners and get a diving certificate in Biminey in one day. Dex says he could get there in one day on his boat. Maybe he'll take his wife and get her off his back. Ethan replies while looking at some babes in the store that you'll have more fun if you don't. Dex VO's, "I'm sure I will." I wish he'd just kill him in the store. This is taking too much time.

Angel sees Deb in the hall and tells her that Wendell's mom has been reached. She's being brought upstairs. "Baby fucking Jesus!" she exclaims. Angel reminds her that he's Catholic. Yeah, I think they're OK with the whole whoremongering thing. She says she's sorry, then she asks him if he knows the word "bumkis?" "I think its bupkis." "Shit."

Angel tells Deb he has a cold case -- a dead john. He asks if she busted the same places over and over when she was working vice. No, most clients were regulars so word would spread fast and they would move decoys around. Then, Vince passes and she says loudly, "If you really want to know about paying for sex, you should talk to Matsuka." He doesn't respond and just walks past. Angel asks him hold up. Did he review sheriffs department's forensics regarding skinning victim. He says he fucking would if they'd fucking send them. He has asked four fucking times. Deb says someone needs a hug. She would give him one but doesn't know what she'd catch. He still doesn't respond and just asks if he can go. Deb breaks it down and says she can take inappropriate, porn-loving, and flatulent Matsuka, but the dress shoe wearing, please and thank you, zombie Matsuka is freaking her out. He says he realizes that no one there is his friend. Angel says not true -- they added him to bowling team. He says that's because they wanted to raise their handicaps to sandbag the other team... which Angel acknowledges is true.

Vince fumes that not one person read his paper. Not one person showed up at the conference he spoke at. Deb asks if this is really about his stupid paper. "You guys don't get it, you hurt my feelings." Then, he walks away. Deb and Angel, disturbed, walk around the corner. Jennifer Carpenter is so good right there. She probably never thought that Vince could confuse her or make her feel bad, and it's not like she's hurting in her soul or anything, but she's definitely disturbed. They round the corner and Wendell is gone. Quinn says the mother wouldn't let him talk to cops. She heard from the street that the last person to talk about Freebo with the police wound up dead. Deb says she spent all day working on the kid. Quinn says she was never going to cooperate. She says he could have waited and then he says that this is no reflection on the work she did. Yeah, no kidding, dickweed. Deb responds that it's a reflection on how he thinks about her and her work. He asks if she thinks he did this to make her look bad and she says," I'm not sure anymore, Partner." She has got to stop this guy. Yuki, can you hear me?

That night, Angel drives up past a bunch of whores on the street and finds Barbara. She sees him and says "You've got to be kidding me." He tells her that her boobs are hanging out and she says he's blushing. Then, he asks her on a date. Really? We're all blushing now, cause that shit's embarrassing. She says she rarely dates cops, so she's not interested. Does rarely mean "never?" She would have said never if she meant never. I hope that means that she might date another cop, but not Angel. What kind of fucked up relationship begins when you tried to hire the other one as a hooker?

Dex enters Rita's house and she's cooking. She tells him it's a surprise. There are lots of real estate brochures on table. She is going to have Syl set up appointments for the next day -- areas with good school districts, central air . Dex VO's that he knows they'll have to live together, but all he can say is "NO." He actually says that out loud. Rita's all, OK, they don't have to look at all of them. Benz is really good right here. She seems completely confused. He says no to that idea too. Rita explains that "no" doesn't work in a relationship. "Can we talk about it?" is better. Dexter says that he doesn't want to look at houses, not now. She says that's all he needed to say. She and Syl will go -- he can watch the kids. Nope, he's going fishing all day. Wow, this is like some other couple entirely right now. When was he going to tell her, she asks. This is the first he's heard about house hunting. He can't drop everything. For reals, he's got to kill someone. She says that dinner will be ready in five minutes; it's a roast, his favorite. He seems really confused about how badly everything just went. Or maybe roast isn't really his favorite.

The next day, Dexter is up bright and early and on his boat. He VO's that he checked Ethan's travel itinerary. He's only in Biminey for one day. Sorry Rita, he needs this more than a 2-car garage. Miguel shows up at the pier. Syl told him that a certain someone "something pollo" was going fishing. Pollo? Never mind. I think Syl called him chicken or something. She's a little bit of a nuisance. Miguel says that he has a nice boat and wants to go out on it sometime. Dexter says he's going to Mercy Reef to go fishing. Miguel invites him for food first, but Dexter says he can't leave the boat. This is tense. Miguel says maybe he'll postpone the arraignment he has that day and he will come with Dex. VO -- "Please don't." He can't -- he has to be in court to put out a fire that his lieutenant started. Could it be that he finally has to own up to the Chicky Hines stuff? Dex takes off.

At the station, Ramon shows picture of the latest skinning victim's ex-boyfriend. They would like to talk to him. He also wants to talk to previous witnesses. Deb says "Like we didn't get it right the first time?" Ramon says that cases evolve and he means no disrespect. He is acting remarkably calm. I guess he spent some time in Betty Ford. Quinn says it's a lot of disrespect. First he insults their police work, now he insults one of the most dedicated officers he's ever worked with. He's such a put-on. Ramon says they're looking for the same thing -- even though they are two different cases. Vince says that the cases are not related. Someone dug a tattoo out of the latest victim. And it was post mortem, which makes it a different killer. It's in the county medical examiner's report. Angel and Deb ask to see it. Ramon asks if they're taking it seriously and Angel says, "In a heartbeat" -- he's their lead forensics investigator and there's no one better. Vince gives Deb and Angel some sweet looks. Deb asks if Ramon knows how many times Vince has been published. Ramon says all of the victims were strangled and Vince points out that this new victim was actually smothered, which is not opinion but science, which is a "cold hard bitch with a 14-inch strap-on." Deb says, "He's back." Angel says they're through. Ramon says Maria wouldn't agree, but Angel persists and says he doesn't know her as well as he thinks he does. Slam. Ramon walks out. Vince smiles and nods at Deb and Angel. He's happy again!

Dex on the beach. We see Ethan getting phone numbers and flirting. Dexter VO's that he had pre-nups, so he killed the wives to get all of the money. Harry is there, beside him. He says that Ethan chose to be rich instead of married. Harry says he chose to stay married to Doris, even after -- Dex finishes "you cheated on her?" Harry says they're not different from each other. He's here while Rita's at home. He's cheating on her. Dex says he'll make time for his Dark Passenger as well as Rita. Harry says he'll have to decide who his wife is and who his mistress is. There's a woman telling Harry that he missed a spot with the lotion. She says hi to Dex, it's his mom. D'oh. Dexter hears a boarding call.

Syl and Rita are looking at a house. Rita likes this one. She asks if she can use the potty. She looks uncomfortable.

Dex is boarding a sea taxi and holding golf clubs. The last sea taxi leaves the ship that he's going to at 10:45 that evening. Dex says both of them will be off the ship at that time.

Rita comes out of the house. She says she's bleeding. Syl says there's a hospital nearby. They can't wait for an ambulance. What about Dexter? They'll call him from the car. Good luck with that.

Deb drives up to Wendell who is sitting in front of a house and says from her car window she's been looking for him. He asks why, because the other cop let him go. She explains that she is there "unofficially." She says he can call her if he needs anything. Suddenly, we see that binoculars are looking at Wendell. Think that's Ramon? Or the skinner? Deb says she knows it's hard with his mom away, but if he thinks of anything, call. He says he stayed out of Freebo's business, because it was safer. Freebo owed someone a lot of money. Deb says that's probably why someone's trying to find him so bad. Wendell says, when she finds Freebo, please tell him he owes him three weeks pay.

Ethan is in his cabin, clad only in a towel, when Dex knocks him out with a syringe to the neck. All his kill stuff is in his golf bag. He works fast, because he has that 10:45 deadline. He's good with saran wrap. I always get it tangled up. At the hospital, Miguel arrives. Rita is in ICU. Miguel finds a nurse and tells her to contact the chief of staff. Syl wants to know where Dex is. The father should be here. He's busy, Syl. Get off his back.

Dex tells a wrapped and gagged Ethan that he is playing his iPod so no one will hear. David Bowie's "Changes" is playing. Dex says it's too bad he has to make this quick. He says he has been going through changes. Ba-dum. He thanks Ethan for reminding him how important it is to take time for yourself. Then, he feverishly stabs him. His enjoyment is palpable. Next, he's throwing wrapped body parts out of a porthole. Bon voyage.

Rita says this isn't like Dexter. Syl tells her to stay calm. Miguel had the Coast Guard check, and he wasn't at his fishing spot.

Deb knocks on Anton's door. She says from outside that she has a lead. She knows why someone is looking for Freebo. As the door starts to open, she says that he was right about... girl... "bupkis." There's a girl. Someone he slept with. Anton is in the shower. She says that he should call "Debra Morgan" then she walks away. As she's dejectedly walking down the stairs, she gets a phone call. It's Miguel. He asks if she's heard from Dexter. He tells her about Rita and says they need to find Dex.

Dexter pulls the Slice of Life into the dock. He VO's that Ethan couldn't compromise. He loved money more than he loved them. What's to compromise there? I don't get it. He says his days of coming and going may be over, but his life isn't over. Not as long as he has the boat. He checks his messages. He hears the first one -- from Rita. He speeds to hospital.

At the hospital, he finds Rita. The baby is fine. They can go home tomorrow. She says she wasn't sure what she would do if she'd lost the baby without him there. No one could find him. He says he's there now. She decides they should wait until after they've married to buy a house. That seems kind of foreboding, but he says name the date, he's ready. This is sweet. She starts crying. Michael Hall's face is lit really beautifully. She'd like to marry before she shows. He lies in bed with her and VO's that he might not feel his baby's heartbeat emotionally but he can't ignore it. He's relieved that it's still here. Well, that's a first step.

Deb sees him outside. She reminds him he's going to be a father and this was his wake up call. Dex says his life is changing. His place is Deb's. She says what will make her happy is if he's there for the kid. For homework and softball. She hugs and says don't be like their dad. He VO's "never gonna happen."

Later, Dexter is tucking the kids into bed with Miguel. He says he should've been there for Rita. Miguel says he got a fax from the cruise line saying Ethan has been declared missing. He asks where Dex fished, because the Coast Guard couldn't find him. Miguel says he was on the cruise ship finishing what he couldn't. Dex says it wasn't him. Miguel says he was making sure Ethan couldn't hurt anyone. This is crazy. Miguel says they are the same. Dex says no one is like me -- wow, that's an admission. Miguel says he's wrong. He seized the opportunity to avenge the two women who were killed. He says he sees who Dex is. He has nothing to explain or apologize for. He's behind Dex and he respects him. He says good night and leaves. Stunned, Dexter VO's that when they found out who he was, it disgusted Harry, destroyed his brother, consumed Lila... but not Miguel. He's proud. Nuts.

Jeff Long thinks a cruise would be nice right now. He can be reached at jeff.long75@gmail.com
