Warmed-over material, well acted
May 29, 2007This made for TV biopic of The King's early years and his 60s comeback is entertaining enough, but really doesn't give the viewer anything new. The plot pretty much follows Wikipedia's capsule biography, and really has a paint by numbers feel.
On the way, however, there are fine performances by both Rhys-Meyers as The King and Randy Quaid in some of his best work ever as the self-serving and manipulative manager "Colonel" Tom Parker.
It would have been nice, however, if Rhys-Meyers had had enough vocal chops to take on the vocals instead of lip synching with varying degrees of believability 90% of the time. Oh well...that would be a tough thing to ask of anyone. Was this review helpful to you? Sign in to rate
