  • ‘Homeland’ ends ‘Mad Men’ streak, dominates Emmy night

    (Reuters)

It was a nice run while it lasted, but all good things must come to an end.

After four straight years of winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama, "Mad Men" has been defeated -- in a shutout. The new drama favorite is the Showtime series "Homeland," which completed a sweep, taking home Emmys for Lead Actress Claire Danes, Lead Actor Damian Lewis, and Best Writing in a Drama Series. Meanwhile, "Mad Men" nominees -- Christina Hendricks, Jon Hamm, Ben Feldman and Elisabeth Moss -- faced defeat in each of their categories.

AMC's "Mad Men" was seeking its fifth-straight win in the Outstanding Drama category, which would have given the show sole possession of most consecutive wins in the category, to pull ahead of "Hill Street Blues" and "The West Wing." Also winning four times, but not consecutively, was "L.A. Law." All three were NBC programs.

Here are five things you should know about "Homeland:"

    1. President Barack Obama has publicly expressed that he is a fan of the show.
    2. Claire Danes plays

  • Mysteries of the 64th Primetime Emmys solved

(Getty Images)The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards moved along at a brisk pace, creating some memorable moments as well as raising a few questions along the way. What was it Tina Fey mouthed to the cameras? Who is Aaron Paul's stunner of a lady-friend? Did Tom Bergeron have ants in his pants? Read on for the answers.

What did Tina Fey mouth to the camera?

Well, we can't be sure but we think that the "30 Rock" star mouthed "I'm on the list" when the nominees were being announced. Either that, or she mouthed, "I'm not going to win." Both statements proved true -- Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn on HBO's "Veep."

Did Tom Bergeron break an unwritten rule by being clearly pleased with himself?

Nah, not really. But it was odd to see a winner so happy/relieved/excited to win. Bergeron, who won for Best Reality Host for his work on "Dancing with the Stars," jumped out of his seat like it was on fire. His excitement was justified -- Bergeron won for the first

  • ‘Daily Show’ continues impressive Emmy win streak

(Getty Images)For the tenth year a row, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series. In his speech, Stewart had the guts to say what everybody was thinking: The category he and his team won for has gotten really bleepin' predictable.

[ Photos: Red carpet arrivals at the 2012 Emmys ]

"The Daily Show's" win streak is the longest in Emmy history. And it's really not even close. "Frasier" won Best Comedy Series five years in a row. And "The Amazing Race" won the Outstanding Reality Competition seven years in a row. That streak would still be going if "Top Chef" hadn't won back in 2010.

In terms of Emmy wins, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" is one of the most successful programs ever. The last time a variety show not named "The Daily Show" took home an Emmy came about in the first term of George W. Bush's presidency when "Late Show with David Letterman" won. Since then, it's been pure domination from Stewart and company.

  • Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel may have had a few jitters before taking the stage… but he made it out there thanks to some very famous girlfriends. In a hilarious taped bit that led off this year's Emmys, a slew of our favorite TV actresses teamed up to get Kimmel ready for his big night.

The sketch opens with nominees Zooey Deschanel and Christina Hendricks wearing very plush Emmys robes and primping in the ladies' room backstage, comparing their pouty faces. (We prefer Christina's, for the record.) But they're interrupted by some very high-pitched crying coming from one of the bathroom stalls. Joined by Mindy Kaling, Martha Plimpton, and Connie Britton, they knock on one of the stalls… only to find "Girls" star Lena Dunham nude and eating a birthday cake. (As far as awkward shots of a naked Lena Dunham go, this one doesn't even make the top ten… but we digress.)

Lena wasn't the one crying, though; it's coming from the next stall over. The door is locked, but a no-nonsense Kathy Bates makes

  • Julie Bowen imitates co-star Sofia Vergara on red carpet

Sofia Vergara certainly has a very distinct voice, and one of her co-stars has a habit of emulating it! "Modern Family" star Julie Bowen talked to E!'s Ryan Seacrest on the Emmy red carpet this afternoon and explained that she and Vergara always consult on what color they're wearing to the award ceremony. The actress imitated her Colombian co-star's signature accent when explaining this year's phone call, "Apparently it's a turquoise, but in her translation it's, 'You know it's like a blue, but a green, you know, it's a color.'" Despite the language barrier, Julie then knew her yellow gown would not match Vergara's choice. "I just don't want to stand next to her in the same color," she explained.

It's not the first time Bowen has channeled the exotic accent. Julie also took to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" earlier this week and attempted to re-create a scene at Sofia's birthday party last year, where the Colombian imitated white people dancing

  • Meaning behind Amy Poehler’s red carpet ring

"Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler was looking glam on the red carpet in advance of the Emmy Awards. But it was her ring that made quite a sentimental statement.

Poehler, an Emmy nominee for lead actress in a comedy, was wearing a sparkly halter dress with plunging neckline from Stella McCartney. And her jewelry? Instead of $2 million bling, the blonde opted for a $2 adjustable ring that came out of her child's toy box.

She wore the oversized accessory in place of a wedding ring.

The comedian has faced some serious challenges this year. The actress recently announced her split from Will Arnett, her husband of nine years. They have two children together, who apparently don't hold back on the fashion advice.

Poehler told Ryan Seacrest of her son's pushing the kiddie ring, "He told me I should wear it, and I listen to him." She called her children "super great and cute."

  • Michael J. Fox and family hit Emmy red carpet

(Getty Images)Michael J. Fox made the Emmy red carpet a family affair, bringing along wife, Tracy Pollan, and his son, Sam, who bears a striking resemblance to his famous dad. The 51-year-old double nominee is being recognized for his guest roles as Louis Canning on "The Good Wife" and for appearing as himself on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." His son, Sam Michael, is the oldest of Fox's four children. The 23-year-old once appeared on an episode of "Spin City." While he has mom's smile, he inherited dad's eyes and looks like Fox during the "Family Ties" years.

Fox talked to E!'s Ryan Seacrest about his return to network primetime television, as NBC recently secured his sitcom after a bidding war. On the red carpet, the actor said he was ready to get back to work because he didn't want to "just sit around and get fat and old." He credits Sam and his other children, 17-year old twins Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances, and 10-year-old Esmé Annabelle with

  • Kat Dennings’s big red carpet fear

    (Getty Images)

Though she looked glamorous on the red carpet this afternoon, Kat Dennings from "2 Broke Girls" admitted to having one very big fear. She told E! that she's "very nervous" something might pop out of her strapless J. Mendel gown, explaining, "If I stand up too straight there's a possibility, so if I hunch that's why. It's not because I have terrible posture, it's from fear of things coming out."

[ Photos: Red carpet arrivals at the 2012 Emmys ]

"No matter what I do, they're there," she lamented, referring to her ample bust, when E!'s Giuliana Rancic noted the actress's voluptuous figure. But tonight's presenter has a backup plan. Dennings has her boyfriend -- co-star Nick Zano -- on dress mishap alert, telling Rancic that Zano is always "primed and ready" to come to the rescue. Dennings garnered rave reviews for the risk she took with the dress, and Fashion Police's Kelly Osbourne noted, "I think it's the boobies, we love them."
