Tami has a problem with the schools ability to fund the football program, while being unable to fund normal school operations. Meanwhile, Tyra is informed that, due to her grades, she need not apply to any prestigious colleges. Smash, almost healed from his shattered knee, wishes he was as sure as everyone else about his comeback.
When Tami becomes angered by Tyra's actions, things take a turn for the worse. Meanwhile, Matt stumbles upon his estranged mother, and Coach Taylor tries to encourage Smash to continue his efforts.
Eric starts to think more about the job he is performing, while Tami makes nice with Katie. Meanwhile, Julie and Matt reconnect, and Riggins and Billy come up with a scheme to get some quick cash.
First, Tyra leaves Landry for Cash, the bad boy. Meanwhile, Julie helps matt who is angered by the recent return of his mother, as she tries to help with grandma. Finally, Smash says goodbye to Coach.
Matt struggles with his mother, his emotions and Coach Taylor, as McCoy continues to receive more attention. Meanwhile, Tami continues to have issues with Tyra about Julie and Tyra's interest in Cash. But when things go wrong, Tyra experiences Cash's darker side.
Coach gets furious with Tim and the team for freshman hazing. J.D. wins the respect of the town and team, while a late night swim at the lake turns in to more for Julie and Matt, Finally, Tyra is shocked when a woman shows up claiming Cash Owes her child support.
Coach and Tami plead with Jamarcas' outraged parents, Matt tries to ease Julie's jealousy with a surprise, and Billy helps Tim with a plan to get a college scholarship.
Tim has concerns when Jason leaves Dillon in an effort to get his life back on track. Tami challenges Coach over a difficult financial decision, Julie wants her dad to give Matt's idea a chance and when things go badly for Tyra, she turns to Cash.
Tim returns to find both good and bad surprises. Coach has to change his plans and reluctantly supports Tami when she feels obligated to help Tyra out of a jam. Saracen has second thoughts and clashes with Shelby. And finally, Linda and Mindy team up.
It becomes clear that JD has no interest in his fathers advice regarding Madison. Next, Lyda turns to Riggins when Buddy reveals a secret. Meanwhile, Coach is emotionally challenged both on and off the field. Finally, Tyra has a plan to repair her relationship with Landry.
Saracen still struggles with caring for his grandmother, as her mental health continues to deteriorate. Lyla still deals with the fact that her father gambled away her college fund, when she receives an acceptance letter to Vanderbilt, her dream school. Tyra and Landry grow closer as they plan Mindy's bridal shower, and tensions between J.D. and his father go over-board, even after a great game.
The Panthers face their toughest opponents yet. Coach and Tami make a difficult choice about the McCoys. Landry helps Tyra write her college essay, Matt reluctantly tells Grandma Saracen about college plans and Lyla moves out of the Riggins' house.
In the season finale, Coach Taylor's contract is up for review on Billy and Mindy's wedding day. Tyra gets anxious about her wait-list status, Matt leaves Grandma Saracen and Julie behind to attend college, and Tim and Lyla question their future together.
