Born to British parents in Russia, Sanders was educated in England and based in Hollywood from the late 30s. He enjoyed occasional success in roles against type ("Rage of Heaven" 1941, "The Moon and Sixpence" 1942), but is best known as the scheming blackmailer in Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca" (1940) and as the acidulous drama critic, Addison DeWitt, in "All About Eve" (1950), for which he won a supporting actor Oscar.
