Brilliant.

Absolutely the best western ever made, made for TV or not. The casting is first rate, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones-you cannot ask for anyone better to portray these 2 characters of the West. Remains true to the book and should remain a classic for generations to come. Owns the book and the movie. A masterpiece.

Wonderful

Excellent casting and very faithful to the book. Very faithful to the non-glamorous aspects of the Old West. Adult thought throughout and excellent character development. Truly an epic although it takes place over only the course of a year.

too much emphasis on whores, pokes, etc.

This was a good western, but really not fit for children to watch, which was a dissapointment. I did buy the DVD, but make sure my grandchildren are not around to see it.

Overkill
December 7, 2008
Too much emphasis on whores and pokes; Too much killing and burning men, McMurtry's favorite tool. Some scenes seem to be for shock value only.
Actors first rate, did the best they could with the unlikely plot.
