Too Often overlooked gem of a series

    November 2, 2007
Millennium was a extremely dark show that dealt with very dark subjects and in many ways it was just before its time. The series took its main character through the wringer over its 3 seasons and by the end turned him into a conspiracy spewing x-files reject.

That said however the first 2 years of Millennium are excellent examples of what television can be and should not be ignored. Due to Creator Chris Carter's busy schedule with X-Files during at the time Millennium was often left to the hands of other writers and producers which had varying levels of success. The first season was dark and it stayed that way with little to no levity. The second season tried adding some levity with some success but completely changed the storyline leaving season three writers trying to pick up the pieces and make sense of what was left.

While the show changed dramatically from season to season it still had a lot of great stories and the atmosphere and direction of the show was unbelievable for the time. Shows like Supernatural have burrowed their style from Millennium considerably and have used it for great effect. Millennium was a show that I looked forward to each week but it just ran out of steam due to some poor decisions by once show runners Morgan & Wong.

I still highly recommend the first 2 seasons of Millennium to anyone who is a fan of shows like Supernatural or the X-Files.

    They should continue this show

    October 23, 2008
Chris Carter originally conceived Millennium as a series that would present a more mature view of the world from the perspective of a law enforcement officer than was offered in its companion series, The X-Files. To this end, the character of Frank Black was to be portrayed by an actor older than David Duchovny, who played Agent Mulder, the protagonist of The X-Files. Carter wrote the role for Lance Henriksen and pushed studio executives at 20th Century Fox to approve Henriksen's casting. Carter also pursued Henriksen personally and finally persuaded the actor to take the role of Frank Black by leaving a copy of the pilot script outside the door of his hotel room. Henriksen signed up based on the strength of the writing.

    Exceptional and Overlooked

    October 23, 2008
Millennium was truly an overlooked and often misunderstood work of exceptional television. Summed up by nothing short of the main character's name: Frank Black = Dark and Honest. Frank's "gift" of seeing inside the minds and thoughts of society's sickest criminals caused this peace loving family main to endure the torture of the dark and honest truth we all seek to avoid. The truth that true evil does exist. And we need look no further than our own kind for proof. Whereas the X Files explained evil and horror by means of the extraterrestrial or the inexplicable; Millennium's terror was the mirror it held up to ourselves.

This show was also far ahead of its time in many aspects. In 1997, a two-part season finale revolved around a sudden outbreak of a "bird flu" type virus, years before the term became common to our lexicon. That same year in an episode entitled "The Mikado," the story revolved around the killing of innocent women on-line as the number of web-hits rose. In 1997, many of us - including myself - still did not even own a computer.

The light and positive aspects that live through and despite the darkness were equally portrayed in this excellent show. Episodes such as "Luminary" and The Wild and the Innocent" are as good as any hour of television I have ever had the privilege of watching. And, despite the dark themes running through said episodes, the end results depict how goodness and positivity can still survive.

The show was not perfect. The final season's abrupt change in location and storyline was difficult to digest at first, . But, after the great Terry O' Quinn returned, the tension returned. And, the murky mysteries surrounding the Millennium Group itself were often hard to follow.

Chris Carter had a wonderful idea and vision for this show. Many of us still find it hard to forgive his surrender of that idea. But, the three seasons Millennium gave to its fans are treasures we'll relive forever. To this day, I cherish re-watching each episode on DVD. And, if you enjoy solid, frightening drama, I am confident that you will enjoy Millennium as well.
