Pop superstar Rihanna recently sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an "Oprah's Next Chapter" interview. And while a good chunk of the 60-minute chat revolved around RiRi's controversial relationship with rapper Chris Brown, this Barbados beauty had a lot more to talk about than her ex-boyfriend.
Here are 10 things that Rihanna talked to Oprah about -- besides Chris Brown.
1. Fame scares her, so she tries to stay "as close to the ground" as possible. "I'm afraid of the pedestal that comes with fame," she said. "I want to be a peer to my fans. I don't ever want to be above them or think that I'm not one of them."
2. Her grandmother was her greatest teacher. Rihanna's grandmother, whom she affectionately called Gran Gran Dolly, died late last year, but she left her famous granddaughter with a lifetime worth of life lessons. One of Gran's biggest pieces of advice? She told Ri to marry a man who loves her more than she loves him because "he'll meet you half way if he loves you a little more."
3. On being out on her own at age 16. With her mother's blessing, Rihanna left her hometown at age 16 to go make a name for herself. Rap icon Jay-Z famously signed her at age 17. But Rihanna still seems befuddled by it all. "I don't know if I could do that as a mother," she says of being allowed to leave home at such a young age.
4. Do you think she's sexy? She doesn't. Rihanna said she had to fake it to make it when it came to being comfortable in her sexual skin. She calls her Sexiest Woman Alive title, courtesy of Esquire, "inaccurate, but flattering."
5. She's not comfortable with being called a role model. "No, no, no," Rihanna told Oprah, when asked if she considers herself a role model. "Because of what society has made that title. It's become a title of perfection, and that's something nobody can achieve."
6. She's looking for a good time. Rihanna knows what she wants in a man: "I want a man that loves me, cherishes me, values me...They have to know my worth….I want them to respect me," she said. But she added that it won't be all serious. "I want fun times. Fun, fun times. I want laughs….I have everything else, all I want is a partner in crime to enjoy it with!"
7. Her relationship with her father affected her feelings toward men for a long time. Rihanna says her family broke up due to her father's addiction and violence, but she was later able to separate his bad behavior toward her mother from how he was as a parent. She now touts her dad as "one of the best fathers in the world." "He taught me everything" she said."As awful as he was to my mom at times, it didn't compare to how great he was as a father."
8. She still cruises around Barbados. Oprah has a thing for taking rides with superstars (remember that tour of Lake Sunapee with Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler in his vintage Ford Roadster?), so it's no surprise that she hopped in RiRi's car for a cruise around the island. They even made a pit stop at Rihanna's childhood home, where she showed O her old room and the stove that she learned to cook on.
9. She gives great gift. It wouldn't be the Oprah show without an over-the-top giveaway. How else to explain the segment where Rihanna gifted her mom the keys to a gorgeous five-bedroom Barbados mansion with a killer pool?
10. She let Oprah get the best of her. We're not mentioning the C-word here, but at several points in the interview Rihanna got very teary-eyed. You can blame Oprah's carefully orchestrated questions for that. "I am so mad!" Rihanna said. "She made me cry. I am not a crier, man. I'm gonna look so soft!"
