As part of the new season, Gunn will now join the judges during the runway portion of the show, answering questions about workroom drama. Gunn will also have an interesting "superpower": He can rescue one eliminated designer during the course of the competition, effectively giving that designer a second chance.
For many "Runway" fans, this shift in the show's format has been a long time coming. For fans of "Runway" in general (and Gunn in particular), these Season 12 adjustments will make the show better. Here are some simple reasons why Tim Gunn's upgraded duties are the best thing to happen to "Project Runway" in years.
1. No more workroom secrets!
Over the years, legions of "Runway" fans have fumed when the judges weren't made aware of workroom drama and shenanigans. Starting with Season 12, Tim Gunn will be on hand to alert the judges to workroom problems, as well as construction issues with a garment that may not be visible at first glance.
2. The "rescue" card adds drama
Fans of "Project Runway" are very interested to see how and when Gunn will deploy his "rescue" ability. Will he use it right off the bat or save it to shake up things near the finale? Or will he surprise fans and decide not to use it at all? It's an interesting move for the show, and it's nice that only Gunn has the ability, not the judges.
3. Tim Gunn is the best part of "Runway"
Most fans agree: Tim Gunn is the reason they tune in year after year. He's charming, intelligent, compassionate, and knowledgeable. While the cadre of judges can be catty at times, Tim is always civil, even to contestants who don't deserve that courtesy. More Tim is always a good thing!
Moreover, Tim knows what he's talking about. His notable career in fashion combined with a guest judging stint in the Season 5 finale make him a trusted expert. Gunn's excellent taste can only elevate the level of competition in "Project Runway" Season 12.
