'90210' Season 5 premiere: 'Til Death Do Us Part' piles on the misfortune

Lori Loughlin returns to '90210' after a season-long absence

If anything, the Season 5 opener of "90210" proves that this nighttime drama contains more misfortunes than its 1990s predecessor. "Til Death Do Us Part," the premiere episode, features a shattered wedding ceremony, a questionable bar fire, and one young man struggling for his life.

After a season-long absence from the series, actress Lori Loughlin also returns to kick off Season 5.

Naomi and Max take a bumpy trip down the aisle

In the Season 4 finale, Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) took a page from Dustin Hoffman's "Graduate" book by declaring her love for Max (Josh Zuckerman) at his wedding. After a difficult phone call to his mother about the now-canceled nuptials, Max, still wearing his tuxedo, gets down on one knee and proposes to Naomi.

Leaving in a wedding limo emblazoned with "Just Not Married," the two lovebirds plan to tie the knot in Nevada. Naomi and Max encounter a series of misfortunes, though, including an almost-lethal bottle of champagne and a ride from a friendly armed robber. Intercepted by the police, the two lovers end up in jail. Max's business partner Alec (Trai Byers) bails him out and has his arrest record sealed, but he can't do anything about Naomi.

After listening to a laundry list of Naomi's past mistakes, Max is still willing to marry her. A sympathetic judge reduces Naomi's sentence to a $200 fine and also performs their marriage ceremony. Max is now married, but Alec tells Naomi that he thinks the marriage is a mistake.

    Silver chooses motherhood over marriage

Unable to choose between Liam and Navid (Michael Steger), Silver approaches Teddy (Trevor Donovan) about fathering her child. Facing the news that she has the breast cancer gene, Silver wants to make sure she can have a baby before even thinking about a long-term relationship with anyone.

    Dixon fights for his life

When Annie (Shenae Grimes) tries to reach her brother by phone, the county coroner answers the phone. After a heart-wrenching trip to the morgue, Annie and her friends learn that Dixon (Tristan Wilds) survived the crash, but he is fighting for his life at the hospital.

Unaware of Dixon's condition, Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) prepares for her show in Las Vegas and has a fling with a stranger she meets at the bar. After she learns he's in the hospital, Adrianna flies back home to be with Dixon.

Debbie (Lori Loughlin), Annie and Dixon's mother, also arrives at the hospital to be with her son. The attending physician tells the assembled family and friends that he is stable, but he did suffer an incomplete spinal injury to his neck. This means his ability to walk and use his hands could be affected.

From the ashes comes a rebirth

Vanessa (Arielle Kebbel) wants to get back together with Liam (Matt Lanter), but he's still angry over her stealing from their business accounts. If she can't have Liam, then Vanessa wants her share of his lucrative movie contract. To buy her out, Liam puts his bar, the Offshore, up for sale.

After his heartbreaking conversation with Silver, Liam returns to the bar, but his poor stapling job causes an electrical fire. In the ashes of the Offshore, Liam looks forward to collecting insurance money. Navid (Michael Steger), also smarting from Silver's decision, suggests that the two of them become business partners in the bar.

Before the closing credits, Vanessa overhears Liam's phone conversation with the insurance adjuster. Based on her facial expression, it's hard to tell if she is going to pursue Liam, his money, or both.
