Many believe that Ziva's lines and screen time have been reduced on the show, and she is the only one of the cast members who have not yet renewed their contract for the next season. Some say she is unhappy about her decrease in screen time; others speculate that the writers are purposely writing her off and that contract negotiations haven't even started.
Then, of course, there is the introduction of new agent EJ Barrett (Sarah Jane Morris, who many may recognize from her recurring role as Julia Walker on "Brothers and Sisters"). With a big name actress like Morris entering the show, many think she may be here to stay. She hasn't been a main feature on the show quite yet, and thus has only served as a possible love interest for Tony (Michael Weatherley), and a possible thorn in the side of Gibbs (Mark Harmon).
In the season finale, there will be a serial killer that (reportedly) kills off one of the NCIS agents, so speculation is running rampant about which of these two women will be the one to be killed off. The fact is that all of the other main characters, including even Ducky (David McCallum) and Abby (Pauley Perrette), have been renewed for at least another season, except for Ziva.
As of now, Sarah Jane Morris does not have an extended contract with the show, but it is important to note that she is starring in a new pilot for a TV series entitled "Common Law" opposite Alex McFarland. So she does have other things brewing that may keep her off of "NCIS" on an long term basis.
There is, of course, the possibility that Morris was brought onto the show as a guest role just for the next few seasons, and that CBS is keeping a lid on Cote de Pablo's contract negotiations until after the season finale to keep fans in suspense. After all, fans surely would tune in to the season finale if rumors keep churning about the possibility of Ziva's killing. In fact, I can see a big cliff-hanger on the season finale that involves both Ziva and EJ being in the line of fire for this serial killer, with viewers not learning who actually is killed off until the season premier next season!
