From ‘Alias’ to ‘Firefly’: The roles that prepared Gina Torres for ‘Suits’

Gina Torres is a stone cold fox with a take-charge attitude. She's starred in numerous TV shows and feature films over the years, and currently stars in USA's legal drama "Suits" as Jessica Pearson, the no-nonsense managing partner. Pearson intimidates everyone she meets with a unique combination of intellect and ferocity.

It's the role Torres was born to play, and every action-packed role she played previously helped her to cultivate her Pearson persona. While Torres might not do much shooting or punching as Pearson, her lawyer character does kick butt in a metaphorical sense. Here are some of the most memorable roles Gina Torres has played in the past.

    Zoe Washburne, "Firefly"

One of the most iconic roles Gina Torres ever played was Zoe Washburne, wife to Pilot Wash on Joss Whedon's "Firefly." She was a darn good shot, and you'd definitely want her on your side during a fistfight.

    Bree, "The Vampire Diaries"

This strong willed, witty witch had a long history with Damon and Lexi. But when Bree turned on Damon, not even her strongest magic could keep Damon from literally ripping her heart out.

    Lila Robinson, "Pushing Daisies"

A stunningly beautiful woman, Lila was a canny grifter who had a torrid affair with Emerson Cod. She's manipulative, deceitful, and wickedly intelligent.

    Anna Espinosa, "Alias"

Before she took on her role in "Suits," one of the roles which Torres was best known for was the role of Anna Espinosa, a deadly assassin. As talented as Sydney was in the field, Anna almost always outclassed her. Anna was clever, skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and had an amazing head for memorizing complex details in her missions.

    Julia Milliken, "24"

While she did sometimes lose her cool, Julia Milliken was an intriguing character on "24." In the end, however, Julia killed herself (after killing Sherry Palmer first).

    Jasmine, "Angel"

In the fourth season of another Joss Whedon show, "Angel," Torres played Jasmine. Also known by the creepy moniker "The Devourer," Jasmine was a supernatural being who wanted to enslave humanity. Powerful, deadly, and very scary, it often seems like Jessica Pearson has a bit of Jasmine in her at times.

    Cas, "Matrix Revolutions"

The widow of Dozer, Cas lives in Zion with two young children. A cool fact about the Matrix movies is that Torres is married to Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the film trilogy.
