Susan Mayer Mayer Delfino Delfino, who got that name by marrying two men twice, has had quite an interesting life. Though she seems like the sweet girl next door, if there's trouble, Susan is either in the middle of it or peeking through a window naked to try to find out about it. This once time children's book writer and illustrator (who never actually was seen writing or illustrating any books) has also had her share of health crises.
Now Susan has a serious medical issue to deal with. She was knocked down and injured during the riot protesting Paul's proposed halfway house on Wisteria Lane. Among the injuries she suffered was damage to her kidney, which was bad enough that it had to be removed. Most people can live fine without a kidney, but it turns out Susan's other kidney was never working and her body was relying on the removed one.
It will be dialysis for Susan Delfino until she can have a kidney transplant to help out the bum one she had all along. It was just one of Susan's medical problems over the years, so the question is, why hasn't Susan's bad kidney come up before? After all, she's already been under a doctor's care for a number of other problems so you'd think they would have noticed lack of kidney function when...
In Season 2, doctors discovered that Susan had a "wandering spleen." She was told that she needed a splenectomy. She ended up re-marrying Carl in order to get medical insurance to have her spleen removed. Of course, that marriage didn't last after she confessed her love to Mike while under anesthesia.
In Season 4, Susan went to the doctor for tests and found out she was pregnant. It was her second pregnancy and through all the check-ups of both, as well as the births of daughter Julia and son M.J., the bad kidney wasn't an issue.
In Season 5, Susan was injured in the car crash that killed a mother and daughter, Lila and Page Dash. Her "bum" kidney managed to keep hidden through that season also.
Of course, Susan has also had no problem keeping up with the girls when it comes to wine and margaritas despite her health problems. And, she has no problem maintaining a healthy figure (as she showed us through her negligee cleaning on the web days), so I'm willing to bet that we don't have to worry too much about her latest health crisis, which probably won't be the last.
