'Ben and Kate' recap: Unmasking truths on Halloween

It's Halloween, and the siblings at the center of "Ben and Kate" make plans to celebrate in the Season 1 episode"Scaredy Kate."

When Kate (Dakota Johnson) expresses her desire to "check into Hotel Sweatpants and fall asleep with a candy wrapper stuck to my face," her best friend, B.J. (Lucy Punch), convinces her to attend an attractive neighbor's party.

For the holiday, Kate has developed a creative costume for daughter Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones): Marie Curry. "I try really hard to keep her away from the dumb princess costumes," she tells B.J., but B.J. argues there's nothing wrong with princesses.

Meanwhile, Ben (Nat Faxon) and his best friend, Tommy (Echo Kellum), are laying plans. Tommy wants to go to a club, but Ben wants to stay home, greet trick-or-treaters, and flirt with "hot moms."

As B.J. takes Kate shopping for a Halloween costume, Kate objects to the sexy costumes marketed to grown women: "When we're young, we have to be princesses, and when we're old, we have to be sluts." B.J. pooh-poohs her concerns and offers Maddie a yellow princess dress, which she immediately accepts.

Ben and Tommy get sidetracked when Tommy accidentally takes seven of B.J.'s "special candies from Amsterdam." He has never taken drugs and is freaked out, so Ben tries to calm him. Since he's having difficulty imagining what Tommy is experiencing, he eats some candy, too.

At first, it seems as if Kate is wearing another clever costume. She goes as Babe Ruth Bader Ginsberg, carrying a baseball bat and wearing a long black robe. After dropping off Maddie with Tommy's parents, she removes the robe, revealing a sexy baseball costume. Throwing caution to the wind, she greets the handsome host with a prolonged kiss!

Ben and Tommy get freaked out by trick-or-treaters, but not for the reason you might suspect: They think the mom's too hot. So they go to the neighborhood party, hanging out near the punch bowl, acting strange. Kate, whose unprovoked kiss was well-received, turns the host off by crying for no reason.

Ben wants to talk to girls and tells Tommy to fake a heart attack, so he can save him. Tommy exclaims, "Stop looking at me, party!" He storms off, and Ben follows. Tommy reveals he's mad at Ben for always bossing him around and tells him he'd wanted to go to the club to show off his newfound dance moves.

Thanks to the night's events, Ben tells Kate he's willing to accept her for who she is, and she in turn wants to be true to herself. It is after this resolution that she finds a single father who seems a lot like her. Together, they call the cops on the loud party.
