In its short life span, "The Big Bang Theory" has seen its share of great guest stars but a select few stand out above the rest. And though the core cast is always hilarious, these guests bring out the best in everyone. On the other hand, some guests make viewers want to reach for the remote.
These are the best:
Will Wheaton as Sheldon's archenemy (well technically, the sixth in his list of enemies). Evil Will Wheaton first appeared in season three, when we find out that Sheldon is seeking revenge on the "Star Trek" actor for not showing up to a convention where he was scheduled to appear. What makes him so great is that he can infuriate Jim Parson's character like no one else. Upon his return to the series, he broke up Penny and Leonard to win a bowling game. Evil, indeed.
Katee Sackhoff as Howard's imagined version of herself. Isn't this really every nerds dream? The "Battlestar Galactica" actress appeared first in a hot tub with Wolowitz and, in a recent episode, in bed with him. Her portrayal of his snarky masturbatory fantasy is downright hilarious. She even managed to squeeze in a "frak" while lamenting the pitfalls of being typecast.
Mayim Bialik as Sheldon's "friend that's a girl, but not a girlfriend," Amy Farrah Fowler. Fans of the show have long been wondering if Sheldon would ever get a love interest and it seems that finally, he has his very own asexual, genius non-girlfriend. The actress, who is better known for her portrayal of "Blossom," can definitely go toe to toe with the Emmy-winner and together they're an unstoppable force of awkwardness.
Laurie Metcalf as Mary Cooper, Sheldon's mother. The religious Texan mother is absolutely hysterical when she is called to diffuse any situation. She steps in whenever no one else can get Sheldon under control with her cunning tactics. If any one recurring character was to be made a series regular, it should be her.
Then there are the less-than-stellar guest spots:
Eliza Dushku as Special Agent Paige. She appeared this season when Wolowitz was up for a job, which required security clearance. She was disappointing because she portrayed the same character she's been portraying on TV for years, except more bland. They might as well have gotten an unknown actor for the role and saved her appearance for something actually funny.
Summer Glau as herself. The guys see spend a train ride trying to court the "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" actress. Though our lovable nerds were hilarious, she was slightly awkward and out of place throughout the episode. And though it was probably an accurate representation of a celebrity fan encounter, it was not so great to watch.
Sara Gilbert as Dr. Leslie Winkle. Technically, she was more than a guest star in the earlier seasons, but she stuck out like a sore thumb no matter how hard they tried to integrate her into the show. Raj and Wolowitz have more chemistry than Leslie and Leonard did. She hasn't been around since the end of last season when Leonard tried turned to her after his relationship with Penny fell apart. She certainly has not been missed.
Hopefully, the series continues to have a lot more guest star home runs than strike-outs. Maybe one day Leonard Nemoy will even agree to stop by.
