For the most part, the challenges on "Project Runway" revolve around gorgeous gowns and daring dresses. But every once in a while, "Runway" brings designers out of their comfort zone and asks them to construct a garment that is tailor-made for athletic pursuits. Here are some great examples of sporty "Runway" challenges.
Season 2
In the episode "On Thin Ice," the designers were asked to create a figure skating costume that would be worn by 2006 Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen. With only two days to sew and a limited budget, many of the designers struggled with the challenge. Sadly, Emmett couldn't rise to the challenge and got eliminated, while Zulema created a look that was Olympic-worthy.
Season 4
The designers spent hours wrestling with fabric during this season's WWE challenge. Tasked with creating garments for the WWE Divas, the designers had to create a look that was comfortable enough to be worn during a match, but still looked sexy. Chris won with a look made for WWE Diva Maria Kenellis.
Season 5
In the episode "Rings of Glory," the designers met Apolo Anton Ohno at the Armory Track and Field Training Center and were then asked to design a look for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics. With just one day to sew, Korto took the gold (and got immunity in the next challenge). Her look was sleek and classic, while also being just a little bit funky.
Season 8
Thanks to Heidi's partnership with New Balance, the Season 8 designers were given the chance to design a single activewear look that would be sold alongside Heidi's New Balance designs on Amazon.com.
Andy produced three stunning designs, and Heidi broke with the parameters of the challenge and accepted all three to be sold online.
Season 9
In the episode "Off the Track," the Season 9 designers faced another Heidi Klum-New Balance challenge. This time around, the designers had to create activewear that paired well with a New Balance sneaker that Heidi designed. The designers broke a sweat in more ways than one: Team captains for this challenge were selected based on who ran the fastest footrace.
Joshua M. and Viktor were declared co-winners in a somewhat surprising move. Sadly, this episode marked the end of the run for Danielle. "Off the Track" is also notable for being the episode where Cecilia chose to withdraw from the competition.
