If "Breaking Bad" has shown us one thing, it's that there is something very dark and dangerous at the heart of Walter White. In the first half of the final season, more than any other, we have at last received the definitive signs that Walter has gone over to the dark side and become a monster.
Threatening Saul
Very early in the season, it became clear that Walter had become something altogether different than what he was in the beginning. For example, when he backed Saul against the corner and basically intimidated him into continuing in their operation, it showed us that Walter, flush with success at his murder of Fring, now feels that he has the power to do whatever he likes with whoever he likes.His confrontation with Skyler
This sense of power was even more obvious with his confrontation with Skyler, in which Walter once again showed just how intimidating he can be, especially to those who are under his power. If any scene is Emmy-worthy, it is this one, and it is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and emotionally draining scenes that this series has ever produced (and that is really saying something). That scene also showed us that there is a powerful and potent darkness within Walter, and that no one is safe from it.Covering up the murder of the boy
Finally, we come to the unfortunate cover up of the murder of the young boy in the desert. It struck me as incredibly ironic and very troubling that Walter, who has all along stressed the love of his children, would be willing to cover up the murder of a boy. Of course, this shouldn't be all that surprising, considering he was also willing to poison another boy for his own ends. Nevertheless, it does go to show us just how far Walter has tumbled (or walked) into the darkness of the human soul, as well as showing us that at this point there may be no going back.As the final season climbs to its finale, it will be interesting to see just how much further Walter has to go before he hits the ultimate darkness. I'll definitely be watching, but I'm not sure that I can handle what happens when he finally does hit that bottom.
