Bubba Smith Died of Drug Intoxication, Coroner Says

Bubba Smith, the former professional football player and actor, died of acute drug intoxication and other conditions, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said on Wednesday.

According to the Associated Press, autopsy reports revealed that the 66-year-old, who was found at his Baldwin Hills home in early August by a caretaker, had high levels of phentermine -- a weight loss drug. Smith also had heart disease, an enlarged heart and up to 75 percent blockage of some blood vessels.

Smith, who was the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft after playing college football at Michigan State. His jersey number, No. 95, was retired in 2006.

The 6-foot-7 Smith was a defensive lineman and future College Football Hall of Famer at the university, then played nine seasons in the pros with the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers from 1967-76.

Smith appeared in Police Academy, Good Times, Charlie's Angels and Half Nelson and appeared in commercials for Miller Lite.
