"Pretty Little Liars" has achieved huge success since it first aired in 2010 and has maximized on a different strength with each new season. Due to its incredible popularity, the show is set to have its own spinoff series titled "Ravenswood" -- which, as of now, wil premiere in October, after the "Pretty Little Liars" Halloween special.
There has been very little info revealed about the new series, but it was recently announced that Tyler Blackburn is the first cast member signed up to "Ravenswood," meaning his time on the original show will soon reach an end. While it's great to know Blackburn won't be leaving our screens, it does bring up the question of whether him jumping ship is a good idea. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons.
People like a familiar faceBecause of his popularity in Rosewood, it's understandable that the show's creators would want a character people love to be part of their new series. Right away, it will give viewers someone to connect to who they already know. It's a decent hook to get more fans interested in what "Ravenswood" has to offer.
He's a great actorTyler Blackburn isn't just a pretty face; he's shown exceptional depth as an actor during his time on "Pretty Little Liars," going through all manner of emotions and challenges. The makers of both shows know how important a strong cast is and signing Tyler shows they have big plans to make "Ravenswood" equally as brilliant as "PLL."
The end of "Haleb"Since Blackburn's debut, his banter with Hanna (Ashley Benson) caught the viewers' attention. Fans were desperate for them to get together, and when they did, it was an amazing moment. Hanna and Caleb are, by far, one of the best loved couples in the show's history -- and also one of the strongest. To break them up is heartbreaking, because they seemed set to make it to the end. It's hard to imagine Hanna with anyone else or to imagine a good reason for them to split.
He'll leave a big gap in the "Pretty Little Liars" castNot only is Caleb loved for being Hanna's boyfriend, he's an excellent character in his own right. One of very few who has been absolutely trustworthy almost the whole time. Aside from a small incident when he was asked by Jenna (Tammin Sursok) to spy on Hanna, he's been on the girls' side ever since, risking his life on some occasions to help them all. Without him around, it takes away the liars' safety net and will leave a gaping hole in an otherwise perfect cast.
He might not be accepted by "Ravenswood" fansWhile it could make a nice transition between the two shows to have Blackburn in "Ravenswood," there is also a danger that everyone who loved him in "PLL" will be upset by the change and not take too kindly to the end of Hanna and Caleb's relationship. Plucking one character from one show to place them somewhere new isn't always a good idea.
There are some strong arguments in favor of Tyler Blackburn switching shows, but ultimately, it is tough to think of him being anywhere other than Rosewood. However, such a talented young man will succeed wherever he is, so while he will be missed in "Pretty Little Liars," it will be exciting to see what's in store from him.
