'Castle': Importance of Rick being a successful and rich writer

The creators of "Castle" must have realized the importance of Richard Castle being a successful writer before writing the first lines of dialogue. Fans are led to believe that Rick is one of the most successful mystery writers in the world, and this is very important for the development of the show. If Castle was not a successful writer, the creators would have to deal with dozens of unanswered questions. This aspect of his character could be easily overlooked, but it is as important to the show as the love story with Det. Kate Beckett.

    Relationship with the mayor

Rick was allowed to run around with the police due to his relationship with the mayor. It makes sense that the mayor would have a relationship with certain celebrities in his city. If Rick was a run-of-the-mill author who did not have much success, the creators would have to explain his relationship with politicians and might have to stretch reality slightly.

    Popularity

In the early days of the show, Castle was often distracted by his own success. His arrogance and boastfulness were important parts of his character and these would only make sense if he had been extremely successful. It gave the writers the opportunity to mature his character over the following seasons to the point where Kate would realize he is her equal.

    Resources

The writers on the show made it a point during the first few seasons to point out how Rick did not have much money when he was young. His father was not present, and his mother was a struggling actress who fought for every job she got. Now that Rick has money, he was able to live the playboy style he had during the first few seasons. He is able to have the latest technology and has the opportunity to take time off to follow Beckett and her crew around.

    One book a year

Rick has been harassed by other writers on the show (during his poker games) for only producing one book a year. An average writer would not be able to live in a nice apartment and prepare to send a child to college on one book a year. Since his past successes have been explained, viewers can assume he either still has money coming in from his past projects or he made enough before the show started to last him for many years. This way, the creators don't have to answer questions about how Rick is able to live without any money coming in.

Rick's money is an important aspect of the show as it allowed for the story to start out and progress without the creators having to explain why he is able to live or act the way he does. In turn, the writers are able to spend more time deciding Rick's next move and do not have to worry about where his next meal will come from.
