The second episode of Season 5 of "Castle" opened to Det. Kate Beckett and Richard Castle discussing how they would keep their love affair secret for everyone around them. While keeping the secret for a few episodes should be fun to watch, it is not something that should become a major part of the story for months to come. The storyline could quickly become a negative for the show.
Characters noticing differencesWhile trying to figure out how they would hide their relationship, Kate pointed out how she works in a room full of detectives. Her coworkers started right off the bat to point out that they noticed something different with the main characters. Since fans are led to believe the detectives on "Castle" are supposed to be at the top of their game, it would not make sense for Rick and Kate to be able to hide their relationship for very long from coworker's trained eyes.
Captain Victoria GatesBeckett has stressed how her and Castle need to keep their status off the radar to make sure Captain Gates never finds out. The detective has explained how the department has a strict policy against coworkers dating. The writers might have gotten ahead of themselves by having Rick point out the loophole of how he is not her coworker since he does not receive a paycheck for his services.
Could get boring quicklyIf the creators of the show decided to have the "in hiding" storyline last throughout the season, they could paint themselves into a corner. New ways of hiding their love without tipping off the other detectives could become predictable after a handful of shows. Coming up with new ways of trying to stump the detectives would be a difficult job and could turn the fans against the show.
Best of both worldsThe writers could have the detectives realize what is going on and keep the secret that they know away from Kate and Rick. The detectives could also learn about the love affair and simply keep it away from the captain. Remember, the main characters have been able to keep their mini conspiracy away from her. Gates knows Montgomery has some type of connection to the solving of Kate's mother's murder, but does not know how. She also respects the dedication her detectives have to their former boss and hopes she can gain the same type of support in the future.
While keeping the love affair silent will be fun to watch for a short time, the creators will degrade the perception of the detectives if the storyline goes on for more than a few episodes. There are avenues that would meld with the characters to ensure Kate and Rick's relationship is kept secret from Captain Gates. Hopefully, the writers can keep the show as fresh as possible.
