The fact that Richard Castle is almost always seen wearing a sport coat is a very symbolic step the creators of "Castle" take each week. By taking his characteristics into account, it makes sense that he would dress the way he does. Don't automatically assume he simply wears the sport coat for looks.
Business casualWith how entrenched Rick gets into the investigations each week, people might forget he is actually an outsider in the eyes of the police department and is studying Det. Kate Beckett for business purposes. The sport coats help to give him a business look while still being comfortable in jeans or dress slacks. As someone who sometimes has issues separating work from play, it makes sense he would wear jeans and a sport coat since his work and pleasure meld together. Note how he usually wears an open collar to give a relaxed perception instead of a stuffy tie.
QualityWhile Rick always looks nice when he arrives at the police station, the quality of his clothing should be noted. There have been references in the past by Det. Ryan and Det. Espositio to how expensive Castle's clothing is. Even though the other detectives are dressed nicely, the quality of his clothing helps to set him aside from everyone else in the office and continues to promote the idea each week about how successful and rich he is. He often takes steps to flaunt his wealth, such as by purchasing expensive cars and always having the latest phone.
ProtectionWhen Francis Ford Coppola created the character of Harry Caul (played by Gene Hackman) for the movie "The Conversation," he had the character wear a transparent blue raincoat. This raincoat symbolized the bluish membrane that often covers a baby's head and face after birth commonly referred to as a caul. The raincoat protected the surveillance expert from the outside world and protected him from the dangers which might overcome him upon his "new birth" into reality.
The sport coat Rick wears is very reminiscent of Caul's caul in the way that the main character of "Castle" attempts to keep himself protected from completely growing up. He still clings to childish ways when he attempts to be more of an older brother to Alexis instead of simply her father. The ongoing game of Laser Tag is a perfect example of how Rick holds onto his childhood. The fact that the main character's mother lives with him and constantly gives advice would be another.
Logical future changeRick and Kate's connection at the end of Season 4, and the impending showdown with the assassin, prove that it is time for the main character to finally grow up. While it would not be a requirement for the show, it would be fitting for the creators to change the way Rick dresses slightly. It is time for him to stop showing off his wealth and finally figure out if his partnering with Kate is more business or more pleasure. It is time for him to toss his caul and become a man.
