Some of the secondary mysteries on "Castle" surround Richard Castle's father and add more to Rick's character. Series creator Andrew Marlowe stated in 2011 that fans would be introduced to the main character's father after the middle of Season 4, but this never happened. Even though the meeting between the two Castle men never happened, fans should not discount the possibility as the elder Castle is too important to the son's character. Rick's father's absence helped to mold him into the character seen on the show and the introduction of the main character's father would finalize Rick's road towards maturing.
Not there
Fans know how Rick never knew his father and grew up being raised by nannies. Instead of extending the same fate to his daughter, Rick has done everything possible to be there for her. The lack of memories of his father prods the mystery writer to be the best father he can be, even though he is sometimes more of an older brother to Alexis. The absence of Rick's father is the driving force behind the character's relationship with his daughter.
Key inspiration
Due to what was stated in Season 4, "Castle" fans know Rick's father had some type of connection to either covert operations and/or the government. While growing up, Rick dreamed up all types of fictitious adventures for his father, and this may have led to some of the escapades the writer took his characters on. In his absence, Rick's father was able to be an inspiration to his son and was one of the causes for his creativity. Rick's ability to create characters for the masses is due to his father's absence.
Introduction of the father
At the end of the fourth season, fans saw Rick and Kate finally connect due to how both characters had evolved over the previous four years. "Now is the time" is a phrase mentioned on the show which fits since both Kate and Rick have finally overcome important hurdles on their road to each other. At the same time, it is finally time to introduce Rick's father and end the mystery. Since Rick is now with Kate, the absent father is the final piece needed to complete the character fans watched mature over each episode. Fans are looking forward to seeing how Rick and Kate deal with their life together but Rick would not be able to complete Kate until he has been completed himself. The elder Castle is the only one who could close the book on what Rick had been.
